I retired from the township January 1st and am enjoying this new stage of life. I am still interested in what is happening in the area though, and try to keep up with local developments.

Two new trustees, Jason Berner and Steve Coppess, joined chairman Alec Ashbaugh at the first of the year to oversee the business of the township. Rhonda Ledford continues on as the township administrator, and Doug Meyer is the new fiscal officer. They can all be reached at 937-849-9499.

Don't forget to vote Tuesday! It's one of the most important things you can do.

Have you heard that we are putting a road levy on the ballot this November? It's for 1-mill, which will cost $70 per $100,000 value on your house. We know our roads are in bad shape, but it takes more money than the township has in their road funds to pave them and keep them in good repair. It's over $100,000 to pave one mile and the township has almost 59 miles of roads. If you want more information or have any questions about this proposed levy leave me a comment and I'll get back to you.

I'm retiring at the end of this year and so far four people have taken out petitions to run for trustee in November. One is incumbent Chris Crowley, who does a great job, and the other three have never attended any township meeting. That's a little concerning, especially since two of them are members of New Carlisle city council. I would hate to be replaced by someone who has little or no understanding of the township, its governance, and its priorities.

If you're planning on running, please show interest by showing up at our meetings.

I am retiring as Trustee at the end of this year and hope some honest, knowledgeable, dedicated people run for the seat I'm vacating. The deadline to apply is early in August, so if anyone is interested contact the Board of Elections and take out a petition to run.
Being a Trustee takes someone who is willing to: put in the work to learn the responsibilities of the position, which are found in Section 505 of the Ohio Revised Code; take continuing education classes at the State; attend various township, county, and community meetings; interact with employees from many county offices and other townships in the county; and try to help local residents with their issues related to local government. You will also spend time trying to prevent annexation, trying to affect zoning issues on the county level, trying to get grants to supplement revenue, and much more. It doesn't pay a lot, and you will have to be tolerant of criticism from people who have no idea what the laws or the limits of your authority are.
I have enjoyed the past 24 years working for my community, have met lots of wonderful people, and wish the best to whoever takes my place.
If you're interested in running, start attending our meetings every Tuesday evening to learn more about township government - we have one tonight at 7:00 in the fire station at 3333 Lake Rd. in Medway.

Are you 60 and older and been thinking about trying the Senior Lunches at the old Lions Den on Gerlaugh Rd.? Today's menu is breaded cod, macaroni and cheese, peas, juice, and milk. Next Tuesday's main dish is baked chicken and noodles with mashed potatoes and beets. There are also activities some days, like Bingo, board games, coloring sheets, jigsaw puzzles, etc. Next Tuesday will be chair volleyball! The crowd keeps growing, so come join the fun every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:00. There is no charge; there is a donation box if you feel you want to give something.

There will be hearing this Wednesday, January 15, at 10:00 a.m. in front of the County Commissioners regarding the rezoning of the old Hopkins Chevrolet property next to O'Riley's on route 235. The new owner is requesting it be rezoned to allow a trucking transfer station and truck repair facility to move into that location. (Do not confuse this with the Rumpke transfer station, which will not have a hearing because it does not need a change in zoning.) This meeting is open to the public; they are not required to let the public express their concerns, but usually do. If you would like to attend the meeting it is in Conference Room 151 at Springview Government Center, 3130 E. Main St., Springfield.

Have you chosen your favorite candidates for the May 3rd primary election? While voting, don't miss the Police Levy for Bethel Township that is also on the ballot. The wording is a little confusing (it comes right out of the Ohio Revised Code) and you have to read down a few lines to find the word POLICE. The township's police levy has already expired so that is why this one says it is a new levy. It is a new one to replace the old one.

Also, check your voting location ahead of time. There are many changes this time!!!

Here's a helpful list from the Clark County Emergency Agency. Do you have these items in your home, and are they in one location for convenience in case of an emergency? A backpack makes a good container that you can grab when necessary.
