It's almost that time! Don't forget to change your clocks back 1 hour this Sunday at 2AM, or before heading to bed Saturday night. It's also a good time to check the batteries for smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and NOAA weather radios.

Little Missouri National Grassland Plans Prescribed Fire

Bismarck, ND, September 23, 2025 — Little Missouri National Grassland is planning a prescribed fire operation this week, pending all required approvals and when favorable conditions exist. This prescribed fire will help reduce overgrown vegetation that is inaccessible to livestock grazing and help protect and improve natural resources, such as bighorn sheep habitat.

Prescribed fire area includes:

• The Big Top Mesa within Billings County, ND.
• The burn unit consists of approximately 15 acres located approximately 5 miles south and 11 miles west of Grassy Butte, ND, or 1 mile southwest of Magpie Campground.
• No road, recreation trail, or campground closures are planned for burning activities.

Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.

Residents will see smoke during the prescribed burn. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road.

We will evaluate weather conditions in the hours before a burn begins. If conditions warrant, scheduled prescribed fire activity may be canceled.

Stay informed about the scheduled prescribed fire through the forest website and social media channels. We will notify county emergency management officials when burning begins.
