MIAMI – A previously deported Nicaraguan national was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for his role in a cyber-enabled international bank impersonation scheme that resulted in more than $29 million in losses to victims across the United States.

“Ortega believed his sophistication, his use of technology, and the distance between him and his victims would allow him to operate without consequence,” said Acting Special Agent in Charge Michael Townsend of the U.S. Secret Service (USSS), Miami Field Office. “He was wrong. As criminals evolve their methods, the U.S. Secret Service is evolving faster, working alongside our law enforcement and international partners to strengthen our intelligence and investigative capabilities to identify, track, and apprehend those who exploit innocent people. This case shows that no level of deception or complexity will shield criminals from accountability. The Secret Service will continue to protect hardworking Americans and go to great lengths to bring those responsible to justice. I want to commend our agents, our partners, and our prosecutors for their exceptional work in bringing this case to a successful conclusion.”

The successful arrest and prosecution in this case is the direct result of the strong partnership between the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Office of Inspector General Electronic Crimes Unit and the USSS Miami Field Office. Through relentless investigative work, intelligence sharing, and the dedication of our task force officers, investigators were able to identify, track, and hold accountable an individual responsible for stealing nearly $30 million from innocent, hard working Americans. This case underscores the critical role of collaborative federal and local law enforcement efforts in protecting the public and safeguarding the integrity of our nation’s financial systems.

Last night, 363 American law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty were honored during the annual Candlelight Vigil on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Among those remembered were 10 members of our Florida law enforcement family who lost their lives protecting their communities in 2025. Their names were also added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, which now bears the names of 24,775 fallen officers from across the United States.

Tomorrow, May 15, is officially recognized as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The U.S. Secret Service Miami Field Office joins our law enforcement partners across the country in honoring their service, sacrifice, and memory.

Over the past several weeks, Acting Special Agent in Charge Michael Townsend and members of the Secret Service Miami Field Office, including agents assigned to our Lima Resident Office in Peru, worked alongside Investigative Reporter Marc Santia and MS NOW on an exclusive story highlighting our mission across South and Central America to combat counterfeit U.S. currency abroad.

If you’ve ever wondered why the United States Secret Service investigates counterfeit currency overseas, the answer is strategic. The best way to protect the integrity of U.S. currency is to stop counterfeit operations at the source, before fake money ever reaches the United States.

Through decades of partnerships, intelligence sharing, and coordinated investigations, our agents in Peru work closely with their international law enforcement counterparts to identify, investigate, and dismantle criminal organizations responsible for producing and distributing counterfeit U.S. currency. These efforts are heavily supported by our colleagues at the Embajada de Estados Unidos en Perú, led by U.S. Ambassador Bernie Navarro

These investigations are about far more than fake money. Counterfeit currency threatens the integrity of our financial system and greatly impacts the people who can least afford it - local businesses, small business owners, and hardworking Americans.

Last night, representatives from Secret Service Miami attended the Miami-Dade County Law Enforcement Memorial Service at Tropical Park.

This memorial and ceremony honor the law enforcement personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty while serving and protecting Miami-Dade County. The ceremony recognized 171 officers whose names are etched on the memorial wall after making the ultimate sacrifice.

This year, two more names were added: Sergeant David Cajuso of the Miami Beach PD and Deputy Devin Jaramillo of the Miami Dade Sheriff’s Office. Both officers passed away last fall.

We are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, Chief Wayne Jones, and so many local, state, and federal law enforcement officers in remembrance of the men and women who wore the badge, lived lives of courage and service, and sacrificed their own so that others may live.

“It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived.”

In our line of work, preparation never stops, especially here at the Miami Field Office. As we look ahead to the many events and missions taking place across South Florida this year, we are reminded how critical cooperation, collaboration, and communication with our local partners truly are.

This week, leaders from Secret Service Miami and our Dignitary Protection Detail (DPD) met with representatives from Governor Ron DeSantis’ executive staff, leadership from Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and the Florida Highway Patrol to discuss upcoming projects, enhance efficiencies, and minimize impacts to our communities and roadways.

Long before any mission is carried out, hundreds, and often thousands, of hours are spent planning, coordinating, and preparing behind the scenes.

Thank you to Governor DeSantis, FLHSMV, FHP, and all of our state and local partners for your continued collaboration and support of our mission.

Tonight, law enforcement officers and members of the Broward County community gathered to pay their respects at the Broward County Law Enforcement Memorial Service.

This memorial and ceremony honor the law enforcement personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty while serving and protecting Broward County. There are 90 names, and 7 K9’s, memorialized on the Broward Memorial, including our own Operative Robert K. Webster.

Operative Webster was assigned to the Atlanta Field Office, which at that time covered the South Florida region. He was shot and killed in the line of duty on Sunday, August 7, 1927.

This evening, Acting Special Agent in Charge Michael Townsend and Assistant Special Agent in Charge Brian Deer represented the U.S. Secret Service and each laid a rose at the Broward Memorial in tribute to our fallen hero.

We join our event host, Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony, Broward Sheriff's Office, and all our local partners in honoring the brave men, women, and police K-9s whose names are forever etched on Broward County’s Wall of Heroes.

Training may begin at the academy, but for every agent of the U.S. Secret Service, it remains a critical part of the journey throughout an entire career.

In Miami, early Wednesday mornings are one more example of that commitment. Agents of every rank come together weekly to sharpen their defensive tactics skills through jiu jitsu, self defense, and control tactics training. Last week, Acting SAIC Michael Townsend, ATSAIC Roy Francis, and ATSAIC Anselmo Manautou led that effort, instructing Miami Field Office agents and reinforcing the mindset that readiness is never accidental.

Twenty four hours a day, whether training, protecting, or investigating, the U.S. Secret Service - Miami Field Office is always moving.

To the Palm Beach County Community;

After a busy and dynamic past several months, I am pleased to share, in close coordination with Sheriff Bradshaw, that South Ocean Boulevard is now open. At this time, there are no anticipated visits by any Secret Service protectees to Mar-a-Lago for the foreseeable future, including the next several months.

We recognize that the Palm Beach community has been asked to navigate a number of inconveniences due to the security posture surrounding the President’s private residence. That is not lost on us. I want to sincerely thank you for the patience and understanding you have shown as we carry out our mission to protect the President of the United States during a time when the threat environment remains heightened and dynamic.

We have seen firsthand the reality of those threats. From the attempted assassination of President Trump at his golf course to the unlawful entry of an armed individual at Mar-a-Lago, these are not hypothetical concerns. They are real, evolving risks that demand constant evaluation and enhancement of our security measures. Make no mistake, our teams take this responsibility seriously, and we are committed to doing it with precision, professionalism, and purpose. Your cooperation over the past several months has played a direct role in helping us do that.

As we close out this busy visit season, I want to recognize the partners who make this mission possible. To our federal partners, including the FBI, HSI, Department of War, and U.S. Coast Guard, as well as our local and state partners, Palm Beach Police Department, West Palm Beach Police Department, Jupiter Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, emergency services and many others, thank you for your unwavering support and collaboration.

I want to extend a very special note of appreciation to Sheriff Bradshaw and the men and women of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Their commitment has been extraordinary. The level of manpower, equipment, operational support, and intelligence they have dedicated to this mission is unmatched. Our partnership with PBSO continues to demonstrate what is possible when agencies operate as one unified team. From the West Palm Beach Resident Office, the Miami Field Office, and the entire United States Secret Service, thank you for standing shoulder to shoulder with us.

As we move forward, our commitment to the safety and security of this community and the President remains unwavering. While the tempo may shift, our vigilance does not. We will continue to adapt, prepare, and respond to whatever challenges arise, and with the same level of dedication. To the residents of Palm Beach County, thank you for your continued trust, your resilience, and your partnership. It is because of communities like this that we are able to carry out our mission at the highest level.

In great appreciation,

Michael Townsend
Acting Special Agent in Charge

The past few months have been high tempo and a testament to the professionalism of the men and women across our district, along with agents from offices around the country, our Secret Service police officers, protective details, and specialty teams.

Just as important are the relationships we rely on every day. Our local and state law enforcement partners continue to show up with the resources and support that help make every mission a success.

One of the many moments from this weekend says everything about the kind of leadership behind our team.

Shortly before walking the grounds at Trump Doral National Golf Club to meet with agents and officers on post, the USSS Deputy Assistant Director of Field Operations, Mark Ryan, stood alongside Miami leadership to recognize the district’s many accomplishments over the past few months.

Miami is no stranger to a heavy lift. The pace is high, the expectations are higher, and the standard remains excellence. And from D.C. to South Florida, we stand proud of our people.
