At 4:52 yesterday, the Medina Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire in Medina Twp. Chief 1 and Engine 2 arrived to heavy fire in the garage that had already extended into the attic and the interior of the home. The crew from Engine 2 placed a 2-1/2" hose line into operation on the garage and secured their own water supply while Ladder 1 split their crew, placing a hose line in service on the interior and performing a primary search for occupants. They were later assisted by mutual aid crews from Brunswick Hills and the City of Brunswick. During interior operations, a large section of the 2nd-floor drywall ceiling collapsed onto a Medina firefighter from Engine 3, briefly trapping him at the bottom of the stairs. A nearby Brunswick Hills firefighter transmitted a Mayday call over the radio, and crews were able to quickly remove the firefighter from the building to the awaiting Medic crew from LST. The firefighter was transported to Medina Hospital, where he was evaluated and released later that evening. He is at home and doing well. One occupant of the home was also transported with minor burn injuries and later released from the hospital.

Medina Fire Department would like to thank our mutual aid partners from Brunswick Division of Fire, Brunswick Hills Firefighters, Medina Township Police Dept., Medina LST, and American Red Cross.

Medina Fire Department Rescues Man Trapped in Grain Bin

Medina Twp., OH – At approximately 2:12 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, the Medina Fire Department responded to a report of a male who was trapped in a grain bin. Due to the complex and technical nature of this type of rescue, the Rope and Confined Space Rescue disciplines from the Medina County All-Hazards Team were immediately requested.
Upon arrival, the male was found alert and oriented, buried up to his chest in corn inside the grain bin. (For reference, when a person becomes partially trapped in grain such as corn or beans, they are unable to move due to the weight of the material pressing on them. Attempts to dig or move the grain away from the victim are ineffective, as the grain immediately fills back in against them.)
The first arriving crew from Engine 2 entered the bin through a side door and quickly secured the victim with a rescue sling to prevent him from being engulfed any deeper. At the same time, paramedics from LST Medic 1 began early treatment.
Rope and Confined Space rescue team members arrived and assisted the Engine 2 crew with assembling a Grain Rescue Sleeve around the victim. This specialized device allows the corn to be removed. After removing corn to a level below his waist, rescuers were able to free the victim and placed him in a Stokes basket. He was then safely removed from the bin and transferred to the awaiting medical helicopter crew for transport to a trauma center. He has since been released from the hospital. No other injuries to civilians or responders were reported.
The Medina Fire Department would like to thank all the agencies that assisted in this difficult rescue, including the Medina Life Support Team, Medina County All-Hazards Rescue Team, Brunswick Hills Firefighters, Medina Township Police Dept., Medina County Sheriff's Office, Ohio, Cleveland Clinic Critical Care Air Medical, and incident command support from Hinckley Ohio Fire and Rescue, Lafayette Township Fire Department , Sharon Township Firefighter’s Association, and Medina County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.
