Recently, a fun and kind donation spurred an unexpected wave of attention yesterday for Thrift & Thrive, the thrift store “program” of DAP. So let’s take a moment to tell you more about the shop, and maybe it will address some questions we are often asked, or myths we see people posting about.
Thrift & Thrive is not just a thrift store. It is one of the few sources of funding we control - no grant applications, no restrictions, no waiting. Every dollar of revenue goes directly toward safe shelter, legal representation, counseling, crisis services, court advocacy and more for survivors right here in Delco.
It is one way the community funds this work, one purchase at a time. Over 20 years ago it began as Nana’s attic in the Lawrence Park Shopping Center in Broomall. In 2023 our lease was not renewed so we found a new home in Pilgrim Gardens Shopping Center on Township Line Road in Drexel Hill and after a social media naming contest renamed ourselves Thrift & Thrive. While Nana’s held a lot of significance internally and history externally, this new name felt like it said exactly who we are and what we’re here to do.
What has never changed are the AMAZING volunteers who make it run smoothly every day along with our longtime Manager, Janice. Our inventory varies from brand new to gently loved clothing, housewares, furniture and more. Most items are priced as you would expect - $3-8 for clothing, shoes, jewelry etc. while others that are new are priced at a fraction of original retail. Some furniture and other non clothing items are consigned, where the seller names the price and we split the revenue 50/50.
The shop also serves as a donation hub for the entire organization and clients can receive gift cards to shop and get anything they need. This is not only necessary for them but it’s also a step in the healing process as they practice what it feels like to have choice- to make decisions based on their needs, wants and preferences - something most of us take for granted.
For 20+ of DAP’s 50 years of existence, our thrift shop has contributed - not only to needs of survivors, but to our county as a whole - providing volunteer opportunities, spreading the word about the free services that are available to anyone suffering from abuse, helping to keep millions of items out of landfills, and provide affordable goods - and unique steals - for those who seek them.
Thank you for your continued support and for helping us help others.
