If you stood with your feet in the earth
Up to your ankles in grass
And your arms had leaves running over them
And every once in awhile one of your leafy fingers
Was nudged by a bird flying past,
If the skin that covers you from top to tip
Wasn’t skin at all, but bark
And you never moved your feet from their place
In the earth
But stood rooted in one spot come
Rain
Wind
Snow
Sleet
Thaw
Spring
Summer
Winter
Fall
Blight
Bug
Day
Dark
Then you would be me:
A tree.

The native American chestnut (Castenea dentata) was functionally wiped out by 1950 from Pennsylvania forests due to a fungus introduced to the U.S. at the beginning of the century. It was first observed in the Keystone State in 1908 in Montgomery County. Chinese chestnuts like this one are not affected by the blight.

The color of Eastern Bluebird eggs is one of life's greatest joys. But, did you know, white eggs can occur? A female that lays white eggs will do so all her life. The presumption is that she had an infection in her oviduct that impacted her ability to add pigment to the egg shells.

Red foxes are very adaptable. They eat rabbits, mice, birds, eggs, frogs, even insects or worms. They also eat fruits and vegetables, fish, carrion, grain, rubbish, and domestic chickens. If they live around humans, red foxes will happily eat pet food.

A pair of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers can build up to seven nests in a breeding season. They often re-use nest material from previous nests, which speeds re-nesting. This can be essential to breeding success, since predation, nest parasitism, or mite infestations frequently cause nest loss and brood failure.
