The City of Medford is currently accepting applications from Medford residents to serve on one of its many City Boards & Commissions.
Residents who are interested in serving on any of the boards and commissions below should complete the Board and Commission Interest Form available at medfordma.org/boards-commissions. If you are in need of a physical form, please visit the Mayor’s Office at Medford City Hall, 85 George P. Hassett Drive, Room 202, Medford, MA 02155.
Residents of all backgrounds and abilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Medford city services are available to all residents, regardless of economic situation, race, gender, ability, benefit eligibility, or religious affiliation.
In addition to the boards and commissions below, residents are always encouraged to submit letters of interest for any board of commission listed on our website. Should vacancies become available on any City board or commission in the future, we will contact you for opportunities within your area of interest.

Affordable Housing Trust
The Medford Affordable Housing Trust was established by a City Ordinance to create and preserve affordable housing in the community for the benefit of low- and moderate-income households. The Trust aims to create housing opportunities for individuals and families who may not otherwise be able to afford to live in Medford.
Commission for Persons with Disabilities
The mission of the Commission for Persons with Disabilities is to provide persons with disabilities equal opportunity and access to, as well as participation in, education, employment, and public and private services in the City of Medford through advocacy, awareness, and enforcement.
Community Development Board
The Community Development Board consists of seven members, six of which are appointed by the Mayor and one by the State. The Board’s responsibilities include administration of the Subdivision Control Law, conducting site plan review for major projects, reviewing and recommending changes to the Zoning Ordinance, and general planning to guide growth and development in a coordinated and comprehensive manner.
Community Garden Commission
The Community Garden Commission works to enhance the quality of urban life and build community bonds by creating and sustaining a gardening network that promotes the benefits of “green” and sustainable gardening practices.
Conservation Commission
The Medford Conservation Commission is responsible for the administration of environmental laws and policies, open space protection and management, water management, and preservation of natural features of the environment.
Council on Aging
The Medford Council on Aging is to be the primary advocate for Medford’s older adults. To that end, the Council evaluates, promotes, encourages, and provides new and existing services that are intended to enhance the quality of the lives of elder residents.
Historical Commission
The Medford Historical Commission works to preserve and protect the City of Medford’s historic character and heritage in order to sustain and improve the significance of Medford’s place in American history.
Historic District Commission
The Medford Historic District Commission consists of members appointed by the Mayor and interested in historic preservation. The Commission membership is generally made up of residents of the individual Districts, real estate professionals, architects, preservationists, attorneys, and interested citizens. The Medford Historic District Commission is separate from, but works in tandem with, the Medford Historical Commission.
Hormel Commission
The Hormel Stadium Commission works to ensure the proper upkeep and operations of the athletic facility. The three-member board has two members appointed by the Mayor and one member appointed by the City Council.
Medford Arts Council
Established in 1980, the Medford Arts Council serves to bring high-quality cultural programming to the community. The Council donates time and expertise to help residents experience creativity in Medford. Through grant-making, the Council increases public access to Medford’s many cultural assets and promotes favorable conditions for the creative economy. On an annual cycle, they offer grants to community members, artists, writers, performers, instructors, students, cultural organizations, and others seeking to engage the Medford public. The Council also helps sponsor new public arts and humanities initiatives in Medford.
Water and Sewer Commission
The Water and Sewer Commission works with internal City departments, City Councilors, and the public to serve the City of Medford. The Commission plays an intricate role in establishing the yearly water and sewer rates, enforcing the water and sewer regulations, and working with the public to find a solution to any water and sewer billing issues that they may encounter.
Zoning Board of Appeals
The Medford Zoning Board of Appeals is a statutory board created to hear appeals of denials of building permit and zoning enforcement requests to determine if a variance is allowed and appropriate under Massachusetts General Law c. 40A (The Massachusetts Zoning Act). The Board additionally serves as the Special Permit Granting Authority where required by local ordinance and regulation. The Board meets monthly or as required.
