Flag Day celebrates and honors the day in 1777 when the United States approved the design for its first flag. 🇺🇸

The U.S. Flag is proudly flown from homes, businesses and institutions across the country, but you may not know what happens when a flag must be retired and its service life has ended.

Flags may be brought to Medford City Hall and placed it in the metal bin located in the front entranceway. This bin is used specifically for collecting flags to be respectfully retired and is available any time City Hall is open.

TreesMedford Looking for Volunteers to Water Trees

Help keep Medford cool and green this summer!

(MEDFORD) — The local nonprofit TreesMedford is organizing residents to water the newest trees planted by the City of Medford. Volunteering to water new trees helps them survive and keeps Medford cool and green. Residents can sign up to water a recently planted tree using the map on the TreesMedford website here: https://www.treesmedford.org/adopts.

The trees planted by the City each year are a significant investment in time, effort, and resources. You can help make sure that investment is not wasted, and that you get to enjoy the results for years to come.

When the trees planted by a contractor die, the contractor is required to replace them once, but the community loses a year of tree growth, and results of the replacements are not guaranteed. Residents can help by sustaining the trees in their backyards. Large trees are immensely important in reducing the City's heat, and provide screening from nearby neighbors, reduce air pollution, reduce flooding and erosion, calm traffic, improve commercial areas, increase property values, provide wildlife habitat, and generally improve our quality of life.

There’s a proposal under consideration by the MBTA to restore the 94 while keeping the 80 bus service in Medford as part of the Bus Network Redesign Project. Medford is affected specifically by proposal 2, which proposes three options to increase frequency and improve transit connections along Boston Ave.

The MBTA is hosting a virtual meeting on June 15 at 6pm to hear public feedback on the updated proposal and incorporate it into the decision-making process.

This virtual meeting kicks off the public engagement process that will include several in-person meetings to be held in various communities impacted by proposed revisions.

The Medford Department of Public Works will be mobilizing test pit excavations at the Oak Grove Cemetery 7-acre expansion site starting as early as June 11. This work includes approximately 30-40 test pits spread out across the 7-acre parcel. The purpose of these excavations is to measure the depth of soil for burial suitability, as well as to gather data about the soil that is helpful to know for construction purposes.

At each location a backhoe will: dig a hole; a geotechnical engineer will evaluate and log the hole; and then it will be backfilled before moving to the next location. The locations are currently marked with wooden stakes.

As a part of this process, the DPW may need to clear small areas in order to access the pit location with a backhoe. The overall intention is to minimize disturbances to the property at this time while gathering the information needed for the project.
