Training for this Thursday night consisted of NFPA 1410 engine company drills, where members practiced establishing a water supply from a hydrant, stretching attack lines, and feeding another apparatus, all within three minutes.

The highlight of the night was some ice cream from our favorite place, Evergreen!

Today and every day, we remember Fire Police Captain Woodrow “Woody” Pinkerton who we lost in the line of duty on this date in 2003. Woody was a true character and is missed dearly. Please take a moment to think of Woody and his family today.

April 19, 2003 - LODD
Fire Police Captain Woodrow "Woody" Pinkerton, 63
Union Fire Company - Station 251. Medford, NJ
Fire Police Captain Pinkerton was directing traffic at the scene of a motor vehicle crash. Heavy fog was present at the scene. Two flatbed tow trucks were at the scene loading the involved vehicles for removal from the scene. Only one lane of traffic was open. As he performed his duties, Fire Police Captain Pinkerton was struck by a passing car. He was treated at the scene and then transported to the hospital. On April 19, 2003, Fire Police Captain Pinkerton died as the result of complications of his injuries. The cause of death was listed as severe pneumonia as a complication of a pedestrian motor vehicle accident. The driver of the car that hit Fire Police Captain Pinkerton was cited for careless driving.

🚨STRUCTURE FIRE🚨

Task Force 2514 was dispatched to a residence on Langport Drive in Medford at 12:52 AM today for a reported dwelling fire.

Deputy 2510 arrived to find smoke showing from the front door and placed all companies in service. Quint 2514, the first-due company, initiated an interior attack. Engine 2511 arrived shortly after and established a water supply. Crews performed suppression and overhaul operations alongside additional arriving companies.

The fire was placed under control approximately 25 minutes after initial dispatch. All residents were accounted for, and there were no reported injuries. We thank our mutual aid partners who responded for their support.

❗️PSA❗️

This fire highlights several important safety lessons:

1) Working smoke detectors save lives. Take time this week to test your smoke/CO alarms and ensure they are functioning properly. If the batteries haven’t been changed recently, replace them now, and continue to replace them at least twice a year (every time you change your clocks is a great reminder).

2) Handle and store batteries safely. All batteries, from standard AA and AAA to lithium-ion, should be used, charged, and stored according to manufacturer recommendations. Improper use or storage can increase the risk of fire.

3) Sleep with your bedroom door closed. Even standard hollow-core interior doors can slow the spread of smoke, heat, and flames—providing you critical extra time to escape or for firefighters to reach you.

We’re always happy to have new members volunteer with our team as a firefighter, fire police, and/or EMT. Visit joinmedford.org or message this page to learn more on how you can take the first step in helping to serve our community.
