Do you know how much single-use plastic you use in one day? May 25th is the perfect day to think about it!🤔

International Plastic Free Day was founded by Free the Ocean, a business focused on selling plastic-free alternatives to everyday products. From kitchen items like trash bags to personal care items like makeup, their whole mission orbits around a plastic-free world.🌊

The purpose of this day is to bring to light how much plastic waste we create on a daily basis. Over 300 million tons of plastic are made every year, and only about 8.7 percent is recycled.♻️

So take the day to reflect on how much plastic you're throwing away and make a change! Think about how much of an impact we could have if every person made one small change, like ditching Ziploc bags for reusable containers, on the single-use plastic industry and the environment! The Earth and her inhabitants will thank you.🌳

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

Did you know New Jersey is home to several incredible native turtle species, including the Eastern Box Turtle, Painted Turtle, Snapping Turtle, and the Diamondback Terrapin? These amazing reptiles play an important role in keeping our ecosystems healthy, but many face threats from habitat loss, pollution, and road traffic.

Today is the perfect reminder to slow down, appreciate wildlife, and help protect the turtles that call South Jersey home.

To celebrate, stop by Cedar Run and join us for a fun turtle-themed craft! It’s a great way for kids and families to learn more about these fascinating animals while getting creative together.

Come celebrate World Turtle Day with us! 🐢✨

Vultures just wanna have fun!! Enrichment is a large part of caring for our residents; it keeps their minds sharp and busy. Most of our enrichment activities incorporate the animal's natural behaviors.🪶

For vultures, this includes social behaviors like sharing food, pulling, shredding, and ripping carcasses, as well as searching for food! To mimic this, we will give our friends whole fish carcasses and hide food in various objects, like newspapers, paper towel rolls, or toys.🐟🪀

But enrichment doesn't always have to include food; it can also just be fun toys and objects to capture our friend's attention and foster their curiosity. During our cold winter, Socrates enjoyed some TLC from our hospital staff, so our enrichment interns made Ursula a little Socrates to keep her company out in her enclosure!👯

Current Patient: Red Fox

Sometimes you just don’t want to get out of bed to eat breakfast! If you’re this cute, why should you have to? This Red Fox was admitted to our Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital after she was found orphaned and walking in circles in the road. Her intake examination found her to be significantly underweight and dehydrated. She was likely trying to survive alone for a little bit without her mother. Our Wildlife Rehabilitators started her on supportive care to stabilize her before introducing a diet to assist her in returning to normal weight and health.

After a few days of care, she was eating well and was not showing any further neurological concerns. She is progressing quickly in her rehabilitation and will be moving to an outdoor enclosure soon!

New Jersey is home to two species of fox, the Red Fox and the Gray Fox. Red Foxes are larger, have mostly red fur with black stockings, and have a white tip on their tails. That white tip is present at all stages of life, which is an easy way to distinguish between the different species when they are babies. Gray Foxes are mostly a grizzled gray color with a black tip on their tails. Red Foxes are known for their denning underground, but Gray Foxes are expert climbers! Unlike the Red Foxes, Gray Foxes have semi-retractable claws and flexible ankles that allow them to climb trees well.

It's that time of year...let's talk about fawns.

They're small. They're cute. They make you want to go, awwwww in a really high pitched voice. They are WILD ANIMALS! Every year starting in May we begin to receive DOZENS of phone calls daily from concerned community members who have found fawns alone in their yards, next to sheds or just very close to their property. We get it. It's alarming to see an animal alone in an area you may not have seen one before, but don't panic! Nature knows best! Fawns are often born in close proximity to residential areas and mom will leave the baby for up to 12 hours at a time. This helps the fawn remain undetected by predators. The baby is also not yet strong enough to keep up with mom while she forages so it's best he stay put until she comes back to feed him. As he gets older and builds up muscle, he will eventually join her. It is not uncommon that you may never see mom, but this does not mean the baby has been abandoned. Signs of abandonment are; the fawns eyes and ears being covered in ticks and crying continuously for hours.

NEVER take a fawn from the wild simply because it is by itself or you don't see mom in the area. Please DO NOT pet or interact with the fawn unless a licensed rehabilitator has instructed you to bring him in for care. And above all, DON'T BE A FAWN-NAPPER! You wouldn't kidnap a human child from it's mother, please don't do this to wildlife.

Our staff is here 9am-7pm every day to answer your questions should you find a fawn that needs help! Always give us a call first, we are happy to walk you through the unique situation and circumstances you might find. Call us!

Current Patient: Gray Squirrel

This Eastern Gray Squirrel was admitted to our Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital after she was the victim of a glue trap. This glue trap was a large tube, with the sticky side out. The squirrel had her body up inside the tube, but her tail was adhered to the glue side of the trap. She struggled so hard to free herself that she broke her tail and tore out some fur. Our Wildlife Rehabilitators gently removed her tail from the trap and splinted the broken section to support it during healing. The squirrel was started on supportive care and medications to relieve the pain associated with this injury, as well as to reduce swelling. This feisty girl is doing wonderfully with her healing, and we are anticipating her release back to the wild!

PLEASE do not use glue traps, as the risks to wildlife are immense. If you find an animal stuck to a glue trap, DO NOT attempt to remove the animal. Tearing an animal off of a trap can cause significant body trauma that can be lethal in certain circumstances. Additionally, do not use oil to remove any animal from the trap. We see this frequently and subsequently admit animals in even worse condition because they have been covered in oil. This can lead to hypothermia and gastrointestinal issues related to ingesting the oils as they attempt to clean themselves, also creating a whole new level of rehabilitation as Wildlife Rehabilitators must spend days working to remove the substance from their feathers and fur. Please cover any exposed glue areas on the trap with paper towel so that the animal does not become further stuck and bring the animal to your local Wildlife Rehabilitator immediately for safe removal.

If you have questions regarding native NJ wildlife, please call our Wildlife Hospital at 856-983-3329 ext. 107.
