❄️❤️ Snow Shoveling & Heart Health – Know the Risks ❤️❄️
After a major storm, many residents head outside to shovel. While it may seem routine, snow shoveling can place significant strain on the heart, especially during cold weather.
Cold temperatures cause blood vessels to constrict, increasing blood pressure. Combine that with heavy lifting and exertion, and the risk for cardiac events increases — particularly for those with underlying heart conditions.
The Medfield Fire Department encourages residents to take the following precautions:
🧤 Warm up first. Stretch and move around indoors before going outside.
⏱️ Take frequent breaks. Don’t try to clear everything at once.
🏋️ Push snow when possible instead of lifting heavy loads.
❄️ Dress in layers to stay warm without overheating.
🚫 Avoid alcohol before or during shoveling.
🤝 Ask for help if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or are not used to strenuous activity.
Know the warning signs of a heart attack:
• Chest pressure, pain, or tightness
• Shortness of breath
• Pain radiating to the arm, neck, jaw, or back
• Nausea, sweating, or lightheadedness
If you experience any of these symptoms, stop immediately and call 911. Do not wait.
Our crews are on duty and ready to respond — but the best call is the one we can prevent.
Take it slow. Check on neighbors. Stay safe, Medfield.
