Early yesterday evening, department members responded on mutual aid to Millis to assist with a third-alarm fire at a single-family home. Off-duty and call members were recalled in town to provide coverage and assist with the large turnout during Town Meeting.

We’re proud to share some great news for the Medfield community.

The Medfield Fire Department has been awarded $6,414.43 for the SAFE Program and $2,919.58 for the Senior SAFE Program through the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services for FY26.

These grants directly support fire and life safety education for two of our most important groups—our kids and our seniors. From classroom visits and hands-on safety lessons to in-home smoke alarm checks and education, these programs make a real impact right here in town.

We’ve seen firsthand how prevention and education reduce risk, and this funding helps us continue that work in a meaningful way.

Thank you to the Department of Fire Services for their continued support—and to our members who put in the time and effort to make these programs successful.

Community risk reduction starts before the emergency—and this is a big part of that.

🔥Grilling season is here — and so is fire safety season!

Before you fire up the gas grill this weekend, take a moment to review these important safety tips from us at the Medfield Fire Department.

- Clean your grill — Always clean the grease from your grill prior to usingit, especially for the first time of the season.

- Always grill outdoors — never in a garage, on a porch, or near your home. Keep at least 10 feet of clearance from any structure.

- Check your connections — use soapy water on hoses and valves each season. Bubbles mean a gas leak; don't light up until it's fixed.

- Open the lid before lighting — this prevents dangerous gas buildup inside the grill.

- Never walk away — keep children and pets at least 3 feet back and stay present while the grill is hot.

- Know how to shut down safely — turn off burners first, then close the propane tank valve. Let everything cool completely before covering.

- Have a plan — keep a fire extinguisher accessible. For any uncontrolled fire, call 9-1-1 immediately.

We want every backyard cookout in Medfield to be a great one. A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping your family and neighbors safe.

We’re excited to share that the Medfield Fire Department has been awarded $18,700 through the FY26 Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant Program from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

This funding will be used to purchase new gas meters, which are critical tools we use every day to detect hazardous conditions and keep both our firefighters and the public safe.

Grants like this not only improve safety, but they also help reduce the financial burden on the town by offsetting the cost of essential equipment that would otherwise need to be funded through the local budget.

We appreciate the continued support from the Commonwealth and remain committed to providing the highest level of service to the Medfield community.

You've changed your clocks ... but have you checked your alarms? This is a great time to check the manufacturing date on the back of your smoke and CO alarms.

should be replaced after 10 years, and alarms should be replaced after 5, 7, or 10 years depending on the make and model. If they're still in their useful lifespan, replace the alkaline batteries in alarms that use them.

If not, choose replacements with a sealed, long-life battery from a well-known national brand with the mark of an independent testing lab like UL or Intertek/ETL. Smoke alarms that meet UL Standard 217, 8th edition or later, use the latest multi-criteria technology to reduce nuisance alarms caused by cooking smoke.

❄️❤️ Snow Shoveling & Heart Health – Know the Risks ❤️❄️

After a major storm, many residents head outside to shovel. While it may seem routine, snow shoveling can place significant strain on the heart, especially during cold weather.

Cold temperatures cause blood vessels to constrict, increasing blood pressure. Combine that with heavy lifting and exertion, and the risk for cardiac events increases — particularly for those with underlying heart conditions.

The Medfield Fire Department encourages residents to take the following precautions:

🧤 Warm up first. Stretch and move around indoors before going outside.
⏱️ Take frequent breaks. Don’t try to clear everything at once.
🏋️ Push snow when possible instead of lifting heavy loads.
❄️ Dress in layers to stay warm without overheating.
🚫 Avoid alcohol before or during shoveling.
🤝 Ask for help if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or are not used to strenuous activity.

Know the warning signs of a heart attack:
• Chest pressure, pain, or tightness
• Shortness of breath
• Pain radiating to the arm, neck, jaw, or back
• Nausea, sweating, or lightheadedness

If you experience any of these symptoms, stop immediately and call 911. Do not wait.

Our crews are on duty and ready to respond — but the best call is the one we can prevent.

Take it slow. Check on neighbors. Stay safe, Medfield.
