Our station is staffed 24 hours-per-day, 365-days-per-year by a combination of career and volunteer firefighters working together to form a strong group of first responders who answer the call to roughly 5,000 emergencies each year. It is impossible to measure the impact that Steve had not only on our fire department and community, but also on the many volunteers that he mentored at Station 7 over the years.

He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

With profound sadness, we share the news of Steve Phillips's passing this afternoon. Steve was surrounded by his family and friends as he left us, and we mourn the loss of a beloved friend and esteemed colleague.

Steve dedicated nearly four decades to serving our community, department, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. His selflessness and commitment were evident in everything he did. In 2020, Steve was promoted out of Hanover County when he accepted the Deputy Chief position with the Virginia Fire Marshal's Academy, where he continued to make a lasting impact on our profession and the Commonwealth.

We will provide additional information regarding the celebration of his life as it becomes available. Please keep Beth and Steve's family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Congratulations LT William Bryant!

Mechanicsville Station 7 mourns with all of Hanover and the region for the loss of Batallion Chief Phipps taken from us far too soon. Jeff started out in the fire service as a volunteer at station 7. Chief Phipps will be greatly missed. The entire Phipps family is in our thoughts and prayers.

On behalf of Chief Jethro H. Piland, III, the department is sad to report the passing of Battalion Chief Lawrence J. “Jeff” Phipps, Sr., on Sunday, July 18, 2021. Battalion Chief Phipps has been battling Cancer since February of 2021, when he was diagnosed just after his 50th birthday. Jeff has been a prominent staple in our department, serving as a volunteer firefighter, and then joining our career ranks in June of 1996.

The department and the family ask for privacy as plans for a service are made. A formal department announcement will be made when plans are finalized. Please keep the Phipps family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
