Dear Champaign County Residents,

Following the security breach that affected the county’s previous alerting system, CodeRED, in November, the county has taken steps to ensure a more secure and reliable method of delivering emergency notifications.

We are pleased to introduce our new alerting platform, Everbridge. This system offers enhanced security, dependable performance, and a unified solution for sending emergency messages. Everbridge is trusted by millions of users across more than 200 countries and territories and incorporates over 325 security controls. It delivers real-time alerts and instructions through multiple channels, including SMS, email, desktop notifications, and voice calls.

Please note that all residents must complete a new registration to receive alerts through Everbridge, even if you were previously signed up for CodeRED. Without registration, you will not receive emergency notifications.

We strongly encourage you to follow the registration instructions as soon as possible to stay informed and protected.

Register using the website or QR code on the flyer.

🚨 COMMUNITY SAFETY MESSAGE 🚨

We have recently received reports of juveniles participating in the TikTok “Door Kick Challenge,” where individuals run up to homes, kick doors, and flee the area.

We want to encourage parents and guardians to please speak with their children about the serious dangers and consequences associated with this behavior.

While some young people may see this as a harmless prank or social media trend, the reality is that it can create fear and panic for homeowners and neighbors. Residents have no way of knowing whether someone kicking their door is participating in a trend or attempting to force entry into their home. In today’s world, situations like this can escalate very quickly and place everyone involved in danger.

In a neighboring County, there was a reported incident involving juveniles participating in similar behavior who were mistaken for intruders and shot at by a homeowner. Thankfully, that situation did not end in tragedy, but it serves as a very serious reminder of how dangerous these actions can become.

As a department, we care deeply about the kids in our community, and we also care deeply about the safety and peace of mind of our residents. We do not want to see anyone hurt over a social media challenge.

Please understand:
• Damaging or kicking doors may result in criminal charges, including criminal mischief, trespassing, disorderly conduct, inducing panic, or other applicable offenses.
• Parents may be held financially responsible for damages caused by their children.
• Doorbell cameras and neighborhood surveillance systems often assist in identifying those involved.

We are asking families to help us address this before someone gets seriously injured. Our agency will investigate these incidents and charges will be pursued accordingly.

Thank you for helping us keep our community safe.

Over the past week, we received reports of vehicle break-ins around the community. We’re happy to share that, with the help of tips and information from residents, our officers were able to identify those responsible and resolve the situation.

Our officers spent a lot of time this past week following up on leads and working through the reports, and the information provided by community members truly helped move the investigation forward.

We appreciate everyone who called things in, shared information, and kept an eye out. It’s a good reminder that when the community and police work together, it really does make a difference.

Thank you for your support.

Community Reminder

We would like to remind residents to take a few simple precautions to help prevent thefts from vehicles. Recently, we have received reports of a small number of vehicle break-ins and thefts within the village limits, primarily in one area.

While these incidents remain limited, it is a good time to remember a few important safety tips:

•Always lock your vehicle doors
•Do not leave valuables in your vehicle
•Avoid leaving items in plain sight that could attract attention
•If possible, park in well-lit areas

If you see something suspicious, please say something. Reporting unusual activity can help us respond quickly and keep our community safe.

Residents can report tips or suspicious activity to us through Facebook Messenger or by submitting a tip on our website at:

https://www.mechanicsburgpd.org/contact-us/contact-form/

We do not want to cause alarm, but rather provide a friendly reminder that small steps can go a long way in preventing crime.
Thank you for helping keep our village a safe place to live and work.
