🐦 Bird of the Month (as selected by the Bird Town Committee): The Gray Catbird

Have you heard a soft “mew, mew” coming from your backyard this summer? Chances are it’s the Gray Catbird—one of Upper Allen Township’s most entertaining (and underrated!) songbirds.

With its sleek slate-gray color and distinctive black cap, this bird is full of personality. It can mimic other birds and sounds, and it’s surprisingly bold—don’t be surprised if it stands its ground to protect its nest!

Gray Catbirds love dense shrubs and small trees, where they snack on insects and berries like raspberries and blueberries.
Even more impressive? The catbirds we see each summer have traveled hundreds (sometimes thousands!) of miles from their winter homes along the southern coasts and even the Caribbean—all to raise their young right here in our community.

Next time you’re outside, keep an ear out for that signature “mew”—you might just spot one darting through the bushes or hopping along the ground like it’s doing a little dance! 💛

June 5, 2026 Statement from the Commissioners

Although the meeting has been postponed, we present this statement as our honorable municipal neighbor of Monroe Township, Cumberland County, PA, anticipates a presentation for a potential data center project in a residential zoning district along West Grantham Road, West Lisburn Road and Williams Grove Road at a future meeting.

On December 15, 2025, the Monroe Township Board of Supervisors enacted an ordinance that only permits a data center in Monroe Township as a conditional use in the Industrial (I) and Highway Commercial (HC) zoning districts. The proposed data center is not permitted in the proposed residential zoning district unless Monroe Township amends its zoning ordinance.

It is important to note that, to date, Monroe Township has not proposed to amend its zoning map, nor has the developer submitted any formal request to amend the zoning map. Prior to amending a zoning ordinance, Pennsylvania law requires a municipality to issue public notices, hold a public hearing, and refer the proposed amendment to local and county planning commissions for additional public review.

The Upper Allen Township Board of Commissioners has heard from many concerned citizens living in the adjacent Ashcombe Farms development and nearby residential zoned areas whose health, safety and welfare could be adversely affected by a Monroe Township zoning change allowing for industrial type use at this location. Of particular concern is potential impact on four (4) Suez/Veolia groundwater wells known as Grantham (EP103) and Center Square (EP104) which have two (2) wells per entry point and serve Grantham and Center Square customers under PWSID # 7210028, as well as the Trout Run, the Trout Run Nature Preserve, and the Yellow Breeches.
The Upper Allen Township Board of Commissioners understands the residents’ concerns and will continue to monitor whether formal proceedings for a zoning amendment commence in Monroe Township.
