Water and Gatorade Donation!!

The Emergency Services in the Cumberland and Northern York County area are very familiar with "Chemo," who is now in his sixth year of running "Operation Hydration." Today, Chemo visited Station 33 and delivered several cases of Gatorade. Much of this donation today was used just a few hours later at a fire scene. The station thanks him for his contribution!!

Anyone interested in supporting "Operation Hydration" can contact Kristopher through Facebook or send donations via Venmo to .

Local residents are also encouraged to donate water or Gatorade directly at their local fire station, especially as temperatures begin to get warmer!

Transfer Coverage

Fairview Township Rescue 68 and Monroe Engine 225 provided important coverage for Station 33. E225 was initially at the fire scene, but transferred after being released from the scene. Rescue 68 was later called to the fire incident to assist with additional personnel. Transfer companies play a vital role in ensuring continuous emergency response when our primary units are engaged at active scenes.

Working House Fire

At 12:24 p.m. on Thursday, units were dispatched to a report of smoke in a house on Green Ridge Road in the 31-03 Box area. Engine 33, staffed with five personnel, and Tanker 33, staffed with two, responded immediately from the station. Brush 33, Traffic 33, and Utility 233 also responded to the scene at different intervals.

Chief 32 (Brown) arrived and found a working fire, requesting an upgrade to the response. Squad 31, with four personnel, arrived at 12:32 p.m. and laid a five-inch hose line down the driveway, with Tanker 33 following. Engine 33 established a rural water supply using a siamese connection. Three hose lines were extended from Squad 31 to attack the fire.

Response from township companies, along with mutual aid units, focused on controlling the fire and checking for any extension into the walls and attic areas. The main fire was brought under control at 12:46 p.m., with full fire control marked at 1:13 p.m. Crews continued working for more than two hours during overhaul operations due to blown-in insulation.

The fire appears to have started on the exterior of the structure. The building’s wooden clapboard siding, combined with the quick response of staffed apparatus, contributed to a successful operation. All units cleared the scene at 3:45 p.m. and spent nearly two additional hours cleaning equipment back at the station. Company 33 had 16 members for the incident.

Today, we at SSPD remember one of our own: Officer Erick J. Coleman served the citizens of Silver Spring Township from February 1989 until the time of his death on June 1, 1996. Erick was killed off-duty in a traffic accident and is survived by his wife, Karen, and their two children. Prior to his service with SSPD, Erick served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Silver Spring Township honored his service in an official Resolution and permanently retired his badge number, 24-09. We keep Erick's memory alive every day with a plaque in the station but with today being the 30th anniversary of his death we hold Karen and the kids in our thoughts and prayers even closer.

Tuesday Training

This past Tuesday, members continued the vehicle rescue series. Members worked to extricate a mannequin from under an overturned vehicle using airbags, jacks, as well as hydraulic rescue tools. In any situation where a victim is crushed, patient condition drives the speed and technique of the rescue. Several evolutions were run, using different techniques each time.
