Sailors from Naval Support Activity Philadelphia had the honor of presenting the colors this past weekend during AKC Celebrates USA 250, June 5-7, at the Philadelphia Navy Yard as part of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary commemoration.

The NSA Philadelphia Color Guard presented the colors during opening ceremonies for the AKC Diving Dogs Team Challenge, AKC Agility Premier Cup, and AKC Agility Team Challenge, helping kick off three days of competition, entertainment, and family-friendly activities celebrating the bond between Americans and their dogs.

The color guard was composed of Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 1st Class Anthony Smith, Aviation Structural Mechanic 1st Class Jesus Mata, Machinist’s Mate 1st Class Arthur Mu, and Aviation Support Equipment Technician 3rd Class Kameron Williams.

All four Sailors serve on NSA Philadelphia’s Funeral Honors Detail, supporting the Navy’s sacred mission of honoring deceased service members and their families.

Adding to the Navy presence, Ms. Rose Chan, a Logistics Management Specialist with NAVSUP Weapon Systems Support, performed the National Anthem during opening ceremonies on Friday and Saturday.

Hosted by the American Kennel Club at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, AKC Celebrates USA 250 brought together elite canine athletes, dog enthusiasts, and families for a weekend of competition and community. Events like these strengthen connections between the Navy and the communities we serve while showcasing the enduring presence of the sea services in the Greater Philadelphia region as America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary.

The AKC Diving Dogs Team Challenge is scheduled to air on ESPN July 4 following the annual hot dog eating contest, with additional event coverage airing later this summer.

On June 2, Commanding Officer Capt. Geno Dawson presented Kory Miller with the installation's first Command Civilian of the Quarter award and a command coin during a surprise recognition at the Child Development Center playground, where children and coworkers gathered to celebrate the occasion.

As a Child and Youth Program Assistant, Miller has earned praise from parents, therapists, and colleagues alike for his professionalism, compassion, and commitment to the children in his care. Known for building meaningful relationships with families, supporting his teammates, and creating a positive environment throughout the Child Development Center, he embodies the values that make our workforce strong.

Miller's dedication, selfless service, and positive impact on both the children and staff led to his selection as NSA Mechanicsburg and NSA Philadelphia's Civilian of the Quarter.

Please join us in congratulating Kory on this well-deserved recognition.

June 4-7 marks the anniversary of the Battle of Midway, one of the most decisive naval engagements in history.

In June 1942, believing the U.S. Pacific Fleet was on the verge of collapse, Japan planned to seize Midway Island and threaten Hawaii directly. But U.S. Navy cryptanalysts had cracked the Japanese code, giving Adm. Chester Nimitz the intelligence needed to prepare an ambush. Through superior intelligence, tactical innovation, and extraordinary courage, American Sailors and aviators turned the tide of the war in the Pacific.

By sinking four Japanese aircraft carriers and halting the enemy's advance, the victory at Midway demonstrated the power of readiness, initiative, and warfighting excellence.

Eighty-four years later, the lessons of Midway remain as relevant as ever. The battle reminds us that combat credibility is built through rigorous training, technical expertise, operational readiness, and the dedication of Sailors prepared to fight and win when called upon.

As we commemorate the Battle of Midway, we honor the courage, skill, and sacrifice of those who changed the course of history—and recommit ourselves to the warfighting spirit that continues to define our Navy.

Next week there will be cannon fire on the installation over the course of several days.

A retirement ceremony is occurring, and an artillery unit will be firing ceremonial rounds (blanks) outside of the special events forum near the East Gate where the ceremony will take place.

There are two practice days: Monday 6/8 and Wednesday 6/10 at 2pm. The ceremony is Thursday 6/11, and between 9am and 10am you can expect to hear 11 volleys of fire.

If you hear a series of loud blasts during these times, there is no cause for concern. The cannon fire is a planned part of the ceremony.

As Navy Week Harrisburg draws to a close, we want to reflect on the unique moment that kicked off the week: the Navy Week Proclamation by Mayor Wanda R. D. Williams at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. City Government Center in downtown Harrisburg.

The USS Constitution Color Guard paraded the colors, and the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard wowed the crowd with their flawless rifle drill routine. Rear Adm. Eric Ver Hage, a Mechanicsburg native, served as the Navy’s representative for the week. He was joined by crew members of the future USS Harrisburg (LPD 30), who were present on behalf of the city’s namesake ship ahead of its commissioning next year, and many others Sailors from around the Fleet.

It was an honor to see the capital of Pennsylvania shining in Navy summer whites. The enthusiasm with which the city welcomed these Sailors with open arms - our neighbors just across the Susquehanna River from NSA Mechanicsburg - was truly special.

Thank you to everyone who attended any of the events and helped coordinate all the many aspects of this incredible Navy Week!

Twenty-five future service members took the oath to serve during Pennsylvania’s first-ever multi-service military signing ceremony May 14 at Carlisle Barracks - a milestone event created and organized by Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg School Liaison Lisa Bodle to recognize the next generation of military members and the families who helped guide them there.

Representing every branch of the Armed Forces, recruits stood alongside proud family members, recruiters, and military leaders as they committed to serving something greater than themselves. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy Stephen B. Simmons, a United States Marine Corps veteran, thanked parents for the sacrifices and hardships they endured raising the young men and women seated before him, calling their decision to serve “a testament to your parenting” and “the lasting legacy” families leave behind. Speaking directly to the enlistees, Simmons told them, “From me to you, thank you. You are a part of my lineage now and I am a part of yours… Relish this moment. Cherish it forever, and remember that oath in good times and hard times.”

Colonel Lacresha Merkle, USAF, commander of the 360th Recruiting Group, addressed enlistees and parents alike, especially thanking family members for bringing them this far and supporting them through the decision to serve. She promised parents that after boot camp, their sons and daughters would return home more disciplined and more motivated than before. Merkle later administered the oath of office as recruits from all branches stood together to ceremonially begin their military journey.

NSA Mechanicsburg Executive Officer Cmdr. Nick Pecci, USN, and Command Master Chief Scott Reed, USN, attended the ceremony to welcome Pennsylvania’s newest Navy enlistees and celebrate the shared commitment to service, leadership, and readiness across the joint force. Carlisle Barracks Garrison Commander Lt. Col. Torsten Gojowsky, USA, welcomed the crowd to the installation, and Col. Brian Henderson, USA, the Director of the Army War College’s International Fellows Program, served as Master of Ceremonies. Other officials in attendance were Lauren Muglia, Chief of Staff to Rep. Scott Perry; Kenneth Schmid, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commissioner; Pennsylvania State Senator Greg Rothman; and Pennsylvania State Representative Barb Gleim. Resource tables were set up with information for recruits and families to interact with afterwards.

On April 24, leadership from Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg welcomed members of the Hampden Township Board of Commissioners and representatives from the Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation for a command brief and installation tour.

The visit provided an opportunity to strengthen relationships with local leaders, discuss the installation’s mission and regional impact, and highlight the importance of continued partnership between the Navy and the surrounding community.

America’s Navy does not operate alone. Strong partnerships with community and regional stakeholders help support mission readiness, strengthen resiliency, and reinforce the connection between the fleet, shore installations, and the communities that support them. 🇺🇸⚓️
