The mystery has been solved! Earlier this week we were trying to figure out what year the East Mead Diner, or Fair Food Stand, opened. Thanks to Madalyn Davis, we now have an answer. You see, Madalyn was here as a volunteer that first year. She remembers calling friends and neighbors in East Mead Township, asking them to volunteer during fair week… some things haven’t changed. Madalyn remembers that year well because she was pregnant with her second daughter who was born a short time later on September 7th. So, what year was that? It was 1976. Madalyn, thanks for clearing that up, Erin, Happy 50th Birthday (almost) and as for us? We plan to be here for another 50 years. The first picture shows the original stand (year unknown) with fireman Dave Dick serving the hot sausage. The second picture was taken yesterday of our Fire Captain Cliff Hamilton behind the grill. Times may have changed, but our Department’s commitment to our community hasn’t.

It turns out our favorite conversations here at the East Mead Fair Food Stand are with those who volunteered with us in the past. Like this guy, John. He was Chief of Linesville VFD back in the day when he would spend time here with our guys. He stopped in to reminisce with Chief Eric Coston about memories of the past and discuss the changes in fire service over the years. John, it was great to see you. Thank you for saying hello and please come back again.

Another volunteer you may recognize at the East Mead Fair Stand is this guy… State Representative Brad Roae. Brad is a resident of East Mead Township and the East Mead booth at the fair is a legacy originally brought to us by Brad’s family, back in the 1970’s. In addition, Brad has been a volunteer firefighter with us for almost 30 years. We appreciate Brad for his service and loyalty to our community and our fire department.

Volunteer highlight! Yesterday you may have noticed some Meadville Firefighters IAFF Local 515 flipping burgers, fries and hot sausages for us. We are grateful for their help. As we’ve said before, mutual aid comes in all forms and we appreciate the support these guys offered. They worked hard and we hope they come back again!!!

Our Fire Department and Fair stand and so many others are run by volunteers from our community, near and far. As time has passed, the volunteer pool has thinned out and it has become more and more difficult to staff the stand. If you are interested in helping out, we would love to see you. Just stop in this week and see what fits your schedule. If there is another booth you are interested in helping, go introduce yourself, I guarantee they would be thrilled to see you.
