At the heart of Creek Connections is a collaboration between Allegheny College and schools in western Pennsylvania and New York for the purpose of encouraging natural science education through hands-on field and laboratory experiences. Creek Connections has forged an effective partnership between Allegheny College and regional K-12 schools to turn waterways in Northwest Pennsylvania, Southwest New York, and the Pittsburgh area into outdoor environmental laboratories. Emphasizing a hands-on, inquiry based investigation of local waterways, this project annually involves over 40 different secondary schools and the classes of 50 teachers

We had a wonderful morning with Crawford County Youth Conservation Camp where the campers compared the water chemistry of a creek to a pond and then discovered tons of aquatic macroinvertebrates from the stream. It is always a great time working alongside Kaitlyn from French Creek Valley Conservancy who shared about French Creek wildlife from mussels to Hellbenders to otters!

Last week was our annual Summer Institute for Creek Connections teachers. Gannon University's Center for Lake Erie Education and Research was our host this year. Dr. Mason gave us a tour of the facility and shared an activity investigating microplastics in waterways. Other presenters included staff from Erie County Conservation District, Pennsylvania Sea Grant, and Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit 5. All our partner organizations have resources and expertise to share. Contact them about activities, projects or experiences for your students.
