Meadville was founded on May 12, 1788 by a party of settlers lead by me, David Mead.

I served as a general in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. At that time, the Continental Congress had little money, and instead, it granted lands in lieu of cash payments to members of the Continental Army who served in the war. I had read about George Washington's travels through this area in 1757, & was looking for a place to settle following the War. My brothers John, Joseph and myself settled along French Creek in 1788. The settlement was known as Cussewago, then Mead's Mill, and finally Meadville.

I was appointed associate judge of Crawford County, where he served until my passing in 1816.

It was hot last night. I sat under the shade trees by my cabin, listening to the slow trickle that is French Creek. The lightning bugs were playing among the grass and in the brush along the edge of the Creek.

Are they descendants of the lightning bugs that were here in 1788. Has their existence change as much as my town.

No longer the sound of horse and buggies on well warn paths, but cars and tr...ucks on cobble stone and black topped roads.

A town all grown up!

Do neighbors still help neighbors?

Do farmers still bring their crops to market?

I hope so.

As I watch the dance of the lightning bugs and listen to the Creek, I long for the simpler sounds of the horse and buggies but know that hundreds of years from now that the descendants of these lovely little creatures that light up the night will still be here. Witness to the passing of time.

I was sitting by the fountain at Diamond Park last night.

What a lovely spot to contemplate a day, a year, a life. Listen to the diatribe of passers by. A musician playing his guitar. A child crying. A dog barking. A couple arguing over what color to paint their kitchen. The sounds of cars driving by. The water in the fountain, with it's steady rhythms.

The cacophony of sounds mingling with the... my muse.

I watched the fountain without seeing it. Mesmerized. Lost in thought. About my day. About my year. About my life.

The sun was slowly setting and as it set, it's rays played with the drops of water that escaped from the steadier flow. The sun, caught in space. Viewed in time. A moment in a day. And then it caught the mist. And with a sigh, I watched a rainbow form. I looked around the park to see who else was seeing this beautiful vision. No one was looking. No one was seeing.

My rainbow.
