A little update on what your McPherson Firefighters have been up to this past week:
On Thursday afternoon, the Kansas State Fire Marshalβs Office sent out a survey asking departments to submit their availability for possible wildfire deployments over the weekend. McPherson Fire Department advised we were able to provide a 600-gallon brush truck, a 3,000-gallon pumper/tender, a command vehicle, and 4β6 personnel.
On Friday morning, we received a request from the State Emergency Operations Center to deploy our resources to Bucklin, where a staging area had been established. We arrived Friday afternoon and were assigned to a Task Force needing additional resources in Clark County.
Our crews worked west of Ashland in Clark County from approximately 4:00 p.m. Friday until around 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning. A partial crew switch was completed Saturday morning while command staff entered a brief rest period. Meanwhile, our day crew, along with a brush truck and tender, was assigned to a Task Force operating in Meade County.
Saturday evening, another crew change took place, and our night crew worked overnight in Clark County. Sunday morning, crews returned to McPherson at noon for rotation and regrouping before a fresh crew deployed again Sunday night. That crew continued operations in Clark County overnight before entering a brief rest period Monday morning and returning to the fire line Monday night.
Late Tuesday morning, our crews entered a final rest period before demobilizing. All personnel and apparatus arrived safely back in McPherson at 9:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.
We were honored to assist the departments and communities impacted by this major wildfire event. This deployment also provided valuable real-world fire line experience for several of our younger firefighters.
We are thankful to be home safely and ask that you continue to keep those directly impacted by the wildfires in your thoughts and prayers.
Respectfully,
Chief Chad Mayberry
