Last week, six of our linemen traveled to Kansas City to lend a hand after severe storms caused widespread damage and power outages. Working 16-hour days alongside utility crews from across the region, our team joined the effort to safely restore power to communities hit hard by the storms. We’re proud of our crew for stepping up, working hard, and representing our community so well. Thank you to these linemen for answering the call and helping our neighbors get the lights back on!

⚡ Transmission Line Upgrade Project

Starting September 1, we’ll begin rebuilding the transmission line between our East McPherson and Johns Manville substations, along 17th Avenue, Ironhorse and 16th Avenue.

✅ Built in the early ’80s, it’s our oldest section of 115,000-volt transmission line.

✅ Five sections have been rebuilt due to storm damage, most recently in 2023.

✅ The new line will replace wood structures with stronger, more resilient steel.

BPU and Capital Electric Line Builders expect to wrap up the project by mid-December — another investment in a stronger, more reliable electric system for our community!

⚡ Tree Trimming Update: Our contracted tree-trimming crew with GLT Services is wrapping up work in town and will soon head to the northeast rural portion of our service area. This important work helps prevent outages, protect our electric system, and keep the lights on. Thank you to our customers for your patience and cooperation while crews are working in your area!

❤️ Thank You to Our Amazing Community! ❤️ Following yesterday’s power outage, we were once again reminded of what makes our community so special. As our crews worked throughout the day and into the night, local businesses and community members showed up in an incredible way. Food, drinks, and other goodies were brought to our crews while they worked, along with countless words of encouragement and support.

To every business, resident, and community member who stopped by, brought something, shared a kind word, or simply showed patience and understanding during the outage — Thank You!

A special shoutout to Noffy's Sandwich Shop & Pub and The Locker Room Nutrition & Energy for providing food and drinks for our crews. Your generosity was greatly appreciated!

We are incredibly grateful to serve a community that takes care of one another, especially when challenges arise. Your kindness and support for our crews did not go unnoticed, and we can’t thank you enough for showing up for them.

Power Outage Update: Earlier today, an underground electric conductor and transformer failure caused a power outage affecting approximately 700 customers.

At this time, 46 customers remain without power in the 100 blocks of North and South Main between Main Street and Maple. Our crews are actively working to complete repairs, and we anticipate power will be fully restored by 10:00 pm this evening.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as our crews work safely to restore service to everyone affected!

BPU General Manager Josh Bedel recently joined fellow Kansas utility leaders at the KMU Data Center, Large Load, and Comprehensive Utility Planning Summit to tackle a critical question: How do we effectively and responsibly serve large-scale electric loads?

Discussions focused on preparing our electric system for new large-load customers, regulatory changes, rate design, protecting ratepayers and utility resources, and strengthening public-private partnerships.

McPherson BPU is proud to be part of these important conversations, ensuring our community has a voice as Kansas plans for the future of reliable, affordable public power.
