Chris Stanford, District Attorney General, 31st Judicial District

Chris Stanford, District Attorney General, 31st Judicial District Former District Attorney General for Warren and Van Buren Counties in Tennessee’s 31st Judicial District From September 1, 2022 to October 31, 2025.

You may recognize him -- perhaps you've witnessed him in the courtroom, arguing before the judge or a jury. Or maybe you've seen him at church or the grocery store with his sons and wife. Then again, you could know him by his last name -- the Stanford family has strong local roots. Chris Stanford is the neighbor down the street, your friend from high school, the trusted attorney you turn to when y

ou have legal questions that have you worried. Now, he wants to be the man who protects your family and works to make your community a safer place. As District Attorney, that's exactly what he will do. Born in Knoxville, Chris moved to McMinnville with his family at a young age and grew up in Warren County. Being the oldest of five children, Chris continues to enjoy close relationships with his three younger brothers (Matt Stanford, Greg Stanford and Nathan Stanford) and sister (Callie Jo Martinez). Chris’s father, Bob, worked for Carrier and his mother, Amy, was a teacher at Warren County Middle School. Both parents instilled the value of community service in Chris: Bob was active in Leadership McMinnville, and Amy is a founding board member of Mainstreet McMinnville among many other activities in which the couple participated. Chris is a proud graduate of Warren County High School, Class of 1999. After completing his studies in Political Science at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and graduating in the top of his class with his law degree from Appalachian School of Law in 2007, Chris dove into private practice by opening his own law office in Johnson City. However, his fond memories of his hometown fueled a long-held desire to return to middle Tennessee, and he moved home to McMinnville in 2009 to join a firm in nearby Manchester. Four years later, Chris and his wife, Christina, also an attorney, established The Stanford Law Firm, PLLC, serving the legal needs of clients across Middle and East Tennessee. As an attorney, Chris practices in numerous legal areas, including family law, business law, personal injury and bankruptcy matters. However, he has also focused much of his practice on criminal law, appearing regularly in both state and federal courts over his fourteen years of experience as an attorney. Chris is not intimidated by the tough cases and has handled high-profile criminal matters during his career. Chris also enjoys every opportunity he gets to try a jury trial and works hard to be the most effective trial lawyer he can be. In addition to his busy law practice, Chris values public service, as his parents did before him; he is former Rotarian and also served as Parliamentarian, President and Past-President of the Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce for seven years. Despite his busy work schedule, Chris's family is his first priority. The Stanfords are members of the Westwood Church of Christ in McMinnville, and Chris has enjoyed coaching and watching his four sons, Ethan, Owen, Andrew and Eli participate in local sports leagues. Chris' legal knowledge, work ethic, honesty and commitment to service combine to make him the clear choice to represent Van Buren County and Warren County citizens in the office of District Attorney. He is uniquely positioned to successfully fulfill his duties in this role, and looks forward to using this office to pursue Justice and improve the lives of the people of the Thirty First Judicial District.

Please call us immediately if you are a parent or caregiver that needs financial support for any child of separated parents. Also, if you are not sure whether or not we can help your situation, call and ask anyway - there are no silly questions. We are here to help!

I am proud to acknowledge the dedication of our law enforcement team in bringing several drug dealers from our communities to justice at the federal level. Several of these defendants are also facing state charges in our local courts, which may carry more severe penalties than federal sentences. Our conservative Tennessee legislators have worked tirelessly to strengthen our laws in the fight against dangerous drugs, ensuring the best possible outcomes for law-abiding Tennesseans. I will be closely monitoring the DOJ sentencing results for each defendant within our jurisdiction and may seek to impose additional state sentences if necessary. This serves as a warning to all drug dealers that we remain committed to addressing this issue and will continue to take aggressive and well-thought out actions to protect our communities from the poisons you peddle.

It is with profound sorrow that Sheriff Matheny and his staff honor the life and service of Sergeant Morgan Savannah Kemper, a dedicated member of the Warren County Sheriff's Department in McMinnville, Tennessee, who passed away unexpectedly in May, 2025.

Morgan began her service with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office in July of 2019. Her professionalism and dedication to her job earned her a promotion to sergeant, where she exemplified her leadership abilities with her teamwork-attitude and attention to details.

Morgan was also known for her contagious smile and fun-loving personality. It wasn’t unusual to find a note on your desk from her just saying she loved you, and signing her name with a smiley face. Her kindness was felt by everyone.

We extend our deepest sympathies to her loving and devoted parents, Gary and Teresa Kemper, her fiancé, David Rodriquez, her sister Danielle Frady, and all of her extended family, friends and colleagues. Please remember the Kemper family in your prayers.

Sheriff Matheny and members of his staff, including Nilesh Patel, Jason Rowland and Elmer Bigham, joined with staff members from the District Attorney General’s office, including Felicia Walkup-Whitaker, Laura Beth Smartt, Arden Cummins and Marah Holt, and also Smita Patel from the Coffee County District Attorney’s office , as well as family members, once again joined together to participate in the Viola Valley Half-Marathon by working Water Station #1.

It has become a fun, yearly, tradition for staff members from both the sheriff’s office and the district attorney’s office to come together to provide volunteer service for the community.

Sheriff Matheny extends his appreciation to all of those who volunteer and work together to make this event successful.

I am confident that the Tennessee legislature will override Governor Lee's first veto. This bill passed with ease in both the TN House and Senate, demonstrating the legislature's understanding of its importance to victims and their families. I commend each legislator who voted 'Aye' when this legislation was presented on the floors of each chamber. The severity of the offense should be the primary consideration in any parole evaluation. Although this was previously the law in Tennessee, it was removed several years ago. By overriding Governor Lee's veto, we will once again prioritize victims in parole considerations.

Please see the press release below from The Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference, which I fully endorse, regarding Governor Lee’s first veto as Governor:

As April 2025 comes to a close, so does our Nation’s dedicated month of recognition for Sexual Assault and Child Abuse survivors. At the District Attorney’s Office, we recently finished an intra-office canned food and personal hygiene item drive to support our local Children's Advocacy Center for the 31st Judicial District - CAC and Families In Crisis- New Beginnings organizations that work, every day, on the front lines to support the victims of child and s*xual assault abuse. What a joy it is to be able to support the ones who need it most, the most vulnerable victims and survivors of violent crime!

However, the most important and meaningful development today is the fact that Warren County now has its own dedicated ‘Safe Space Clinic’ which is designed to allow for timely and compassionate forensic examination of all alleged victims of s*xual assault abuse. This means that our local s*xual assault victims will no longer be subject to the whims of local emergency medical staff and administrators at our regional hospitals. Now, everyone who seeks justice, will be treated with dignity and respect as they undergo forensic testing designed to help hold the perpetrators of these awful crimes, accountable!

This is such a rare and positive development for Warren County that I hope we will all rejoice in celebrating and supporting the same!

It takes a very brave child or adult victim of s*xual abuse to come forward and speak out. Remember that all victims who truthfully expose this awful abuse, will be believed and supported by all of us that work so hard to hold s*x offenders accountable, every day. It is precisely this fight against dangerous criminals in our society that we must continue to stand firm against, as a community.
