Happy Labor Day, McKinney! 🇺🇸

Labor Day was first celebrated in New York City in 1882, when thousands of workers gathered to recognize the contributions of America’s workforce. In 1894, it became a federal holiday honoring the workers who help build and strengthen our communities.

Today, we continue that tradition by recognizing the hard work and dedication of those who help make McKinney a great place to live, work and call home.

🎉 PROMOTIONS | LEADERSHIP THROUGH SERVICE

Today, the McKinney Police Department proudly recognized the promotions of three members of our team:

👮 Sergeant Joseph Armijo
👮 Sergeant Darryl Saffold
🎧 Communications Supervisor Ashley Beckle

Each brings a different background and experience to their new role, but they share a commitment to serving others and making the people around them better.

Sgt. Armijo brings more than 13 years of law enforcement experience, with a background in patrol, training, SWAT and specialized assignments.

Sgt. Saffold brings more than 13 years of law enforcement experience, with a background in patrol and public information.

Communications Supervisor Beckle has served MPD since 2019, with experience in communications, training and team leadership.

At MPD, leadership is not simply about rank or title. It is a responsibility to the people you serve and the people you lead. It means setting the example, holding yourself accountable, making difficult decisions when necessary and investing in the success of those around you.

A promotion recognizes what someone has accomplished, but more importantly, it reflects the trust placed in them to lead what comes next.

Week 2 of our Citizens Police Academy is in the books! 🚔

Yesterday, our Crime Analyst and Crime Victim Advocates took center stage, giving participants a look at two very different, but equally important, sides of police work.

From using data and intelligence to help identify crime trends and support investigations, to providing resources, guidance and support to victims and their families, participants got a closer look at some of the work that happens behind the scenes every day.

The Citizens Police Academy is all about pulling back the curtain and giving our community a better understanding of the people and work behind the badge.

It's that time of year again – school buses are back on the roads! Remember, when a school bus stops and extends its stop sign, you MUST stop. No exceptions. Let's keep our kids safe. 🚸

🔹 Red Flashing Lights: When the bus stops and the red lights are flashing, you must stop, regardless of the direction you're coming from.
🔹 No Passing: Never pass a stopped school bus. It's against the law and dangerous for children getting on and off the bus.
🔹 Be Patient: A few extra minutes can save a life. Stay alert and be patient.

🚔 Saturation Saturday

Over the weekend, the McKinney Police Department participated in MADD’s Saturation Saturday, an enforcement initiative focused on preventing impaired driving and keeping our roads safe.

Throughout the night, MPD officers conducted 52 traffic stops and made four arrests for Driving While Intoxicated.

Impaired driving is preventable. Our goal is to stop it before it results in a crash, an injury, or a life lost.

If you drink, plan ahead. Get a ride, use a rideshare, or designate a sober driver.

Drive sober. Get home safe.

Please join us in congratulating Officers Joaquin Padron, Nayveon Wheaton, and Aaron Williams on successfully completing the Basic Police Officer Course.

Their class motto — “Honor the Calling. Protect the Innocent. Confront the Wicked.” — speaks to the responsibility that comes with the badge they have chosen to wear. Over the past several months, they have been challenged physically and mentally, spending countless hours in the classroom, on the range, and in scenario-based training preparing for the responsibilities ahead.

We’re also proud to recognize some outstanding accomplishments from today’s graduation.

🏆 Officer Nayveon Wheaton earned the Top Cop Award and also received the Marksmanship Award.

💪 Officer Aaron Williams, who served his class as Vice President, received the Improved Physical Fitness Award.

And while today marks the end of the academy, it is only the beginning of their careers. The training continues, the expectations grow, and soon they will take what they have learned into the community they have sworn to serve.

Congratulations, Officers Padron, Wheaton, and Williams. We are proud to welcome you home to the McKinney Police Department. 💙

Citizens Police Academy — Night 1! 🚔

Tonight marked the first night of the McKinney Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy, and we’re excited to welcome our newest class!

Chief Ellenburg kicked off the evening by swearing in two of our newest Citizens on Patrol (COPs) before welcoming the class and sharing an in-depth look at our department, our people, and the work we do each day to serve McKinney.

Students also heard from our Background and Recruiting team, who gave them a closer look at the hiring process and what it takes to become part of MPD.

We wrapped up the night with members of our COP program and CPA Alumni Association, giving students the opportunity to learn more about the many ways our community stays connected and involved with the department.

Night 1 is officially in the books! We’re looking forward to the weeks ahead as this class gets a behind-the-scenes look at the people, training, and operations that make up the McKinney Police Department.

On Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 07:20am, all southbound lanes of Coit Road at Jacksboro Lane are closed due to a crash. Frisco Police officers are on scene investigating the crash. Expect delays in the area during the morning commute. We will post an update when the roadway reopens.
