River conditions across Garrett County remain elevated this afternoon especially along Bear Creek and other fast-moving waterways. While water levels have begun to slowly recede, streams, creeks, and rivers remain swift, and dangerous. Bear Creek reached some of its highest levels in decades early this morning.

Please continue to use extreme caution around all waterways in the county. Even a small amount of fast-moving water can be extremely dangerous. Falling into a creek or river under current conditions could quickly become fatal due to strong currents, cold water temperatures, debris, and rapidly changing conditions.

Remember:
• Stay away from riverbanks and flooded areas
• Keep children and pets away from streams and creeks
• Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways
• Turn Around, Don’t Drown

🌧️ Flood Update for Garrett County 🌧️

In coordination with the National Weather Service in Sterling, all Flood Warnings for Garrett County have been lifted; however, the Flood Watch remains in effect.

While a few stray showers are still possible today, the overall flood threat has diminished significantly. Emergency Management personnel continue to closely monitor streams, creeks, and river gauges across the county, especially in the Friendsville area where waterways remain elevated.

📍 Bear Creek rose rapidly this morning, reaching approximately 5.71 feet this morning — the highest level observed since 1971. Historical records show the creek reached a record crest of 9.6 feet back in 1971. The good news is that water levels on Bear Creek are now beginning to recede, with the gauge currently trending downward.

We would like to thank our partners at Garrett County Roads, the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, Natural Resource Police and our local volunteer fire and rescue personnel for their preparation, coordination, and assistance throughout this weather event.

Please continue to monitor official weather sources and emergency notifications for updates.

⚠️ Remember: Never drive through flooded roadways — Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

Stay safe, Garrett County.
