The first day of school for EVSC (Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation) is tomorrow. McCutchanville Fire Department would like to remind you of a few safety tips as schools enter the 2026-2027 school year.

With EVSC schools starting back up next week McCutchanville Fire Department would like to remind you of a few school bus safety tips.

School buses are the safest way for students to travel, but children also need to do their part to stay alert and aware of their surroundings to prevent injury. NSC urges parents to teach their children the following safety rules for getting on and off the bus, and for exercising good behavior while riding.

Getting on the Bus:

When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic and avoid roughhousing or other behavior that can lead to carelessness

Do not stray onto the street, alleys or private property

Line up away from the street or road as the bus approaches

Wait until the bus has stopped and the door opens before approaching the bus

Use the handrail when boarding

Getting Off the Bus:

Use the handrail when exiting

If you have to cross in front of the bus, first walk at least 10 feet ahead until you can see the driver

Make sure the driver can see you

Wait for a signal from the driver before crossing

When the driver signals, look left, right, then left again. Walk across the road and keep an eye out for sudden traffic changes

If your vision is blocked, move to an area where you can see other drivers and they can see you

Do not cross the center line of the road until the driver signals it is safe

Stay away from the rear wheels of the bus at all times.

With temperatures reaching the high temps recently, McCutchanville Fire Department would like to provide some tips about beating the heat this summer.

Hydration:

•Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.

•Avoid sugary drinks, alcohol, and excessive caffeine, as they can dehydrate you.

•Consider electrolyte drinks if you're engaging in strenuous activity.

Clothing:

•Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothing to allow for better airflow and reflect sunlight.

•Natural fabrics like cotton and linen are good choices as they allow your skin to breathe.

Cooling Down:

•Spend time in air-conditioned spaces such as libraries, shopping malls, or community centers.

•Take cool showers or baths to help lower your body temperature.

•Use fans to circulate air, but if the air is hotter than the room temperature, it will not be effective.

•Place a cool, damp cloth on your neck or forehead for quick relief.

Activity:

•Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day (usually midday).

•Pace yourself and take breaks in the shade if you need to be outside.

•Schedule outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day.

Other Tips:

•Close curtains or blinds to block out sunlight and keep your home cooler.

•Eat light, refreshing meals and avoid heavy, hot foods.
Check on vulnerable individuals like the elderly or those with health conditions.

•Never leave children or pets in parked cars, even for a short time.

While you are enjoying your grilling, family time, and fireworks, take time to remind your kids what this holiday is about. The lighting and display of fireworks came with a price to many men and women sacrificing for their kids and future generations. Use the fireworks display as a teaching tool; share with them the lyrics of the star spangled banner and, most of all, remain safe if your family tradition includes lighting fireworks. Below are 10 fireworks safety tips you should use and teach to your kids.

*Fireworks packaged in brown paper are made for professional displays – avoid buying.

*Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities, especially with sparklers.

*Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.

*Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire and to douse used fireworks before discarding in trash.

*Never allow young children to play or ignite fireworks.

*Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.

*Never try to re-light or pickup fireworks that have not ignited fully.

*Never place a part of your body directly over a firework device when lighting.

*Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

With July 4th on the horizon, McCutchanville Fire Department would like to share a few firework safety tips. Always use extreme caution while interacting with fireworks.

🧨Never allow young children to handle fireworks.

🧨Older children should use them only under close adult supervision.

🧨Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

🧨Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear.

🧨Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands
Never light them indoors.

🧨Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material.

🧨Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

🧨Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.

🧨Never ignite devices in a container
Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks.

🧨Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding.

🧨Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire.

🧨Never use illegal fireworks.
