🏛️ Know Your Government – McCormick County Probate Court
Did you know that the McCormick County Probate Court handles some of life's most important legal matters? From helping families settle estates to issuing marriage licenses, the Probate Court serves residents during both joyful and challenging times.
The Probate Court is responsible for:
💍 Marriage Licenses – Issuing marriage licenses to couples beginning their new journey together.
📜 Estate Administration – Validating wills, identifying heirs, and overseeing the proper distribution of assets for deceased residents.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Guardianships & Conservatorships – Appointing legal guardians and conservators for minors and adults who are unable to manage their personal or financial affairs.
🧠 Mental Health & Substance Abuse Hearings – Conducting involuntary commitment hearings for individuals experiencing mental illness or addiction-related issues.
⚖️ Minor Settlements – Reviewing and approving legal settlements involving minors when the settlement amount is less than $25,000.
In South Carolina, each Probate Judge is elected by the citizens of their county and serves a four-year term. Probate Courts also have jurisdiction over trusts and share jurisdiction with Circuit Courts regarding powers of attorney.

While McCormick County does not operate a water treatment plant, our Water & Sewer Department has an important job:

✅ Maintains miles of water lines
✅ Repairs leaks and water main breaks
✅ Maintains water tanks and pumping equipment
✅ Installs new services and meters
✅ Monitors water pressure throughout the system
✅ Delivers treated drinking water to customers

Think of it this way: Our suppliers treat the water, and McCormick County delivers it safely and reliably to your home or business.

Did you know the Clerk of Court is an elected official who serves as the custodian of some of the County's most important legal records?

The Clerk of Court plays a vital role in the administration of justice by maintaining court records, managing jury operations, processing legal filings, and recording real estate documents.

📋 What the Clerk of Court Does:
✔ Maintains records for Civil, Criminal, and Family Court cases
✔ Schedules civil jury and non-jury trials
✔ Prepares juror summons and processes jury payments
✔ Records deeds, mortgages, plats, liens, judgments, and other real estate documents
✔ Collects court-ordered fines and fees
✔ Screens applications and appoints Public Defenders for eligible individuals
✔ Assists the public with questions regarding court operations and recorded documents
✔ Maintains records involving juvenile matters, domestic relations, adoptions, child support, abuse and neglect cases, and orders of protection

🏠 Register of Deeds Functions
In McCormick County, the Clerk of Court also serves as the Register of Deeds, preserving official property records and ensuring important documents become part of the public record.

Mary G. Shirley - McCormick County Treasurer

Mary G. Shirley is a lifelong resident of McCormick County and has dedicated her career to serving the citizens of her community. She began her professional career as Office Manager at Talmadge Manufacturing in McCormick, South Carolina, where she worked for 11 years and gained extensive experience in financial management, administration and customer service.

Following her time at Talmadge Manufacturing, Mary joined the McCormick County Treasurer's Office as Deputy Treasurer, serving for five years. Her commitment to public service and strong financial background led her to seek elected office, and in 2003, she successfully ran for McCormick County Treasurer. Since that time, she has continued to earn the trust and confidence of McCormick County residents and remains the current County Treasurer.

With 28 years of service to McCormick County government, Mary has established a reputation for professionalism, accountability, and fiscal responsibility. As County Treasurer, she serves as the county's chief banker and is responsible for managing and safeguarding public funds.
Her duties include:

• Collecting real and personal propetty taxes.
• Collecting motor vehicle license renewal fees on behalf of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.
• Receiving, safeguarding, and depositing funds from various county departments.
• Disbursing funds necessary for county government operations.
• Issuing and administering procedures for the collection of delinquent taxes, including overseeing tax sale auctions when necessary.
• Reconciling more than 30 county bank accounts to ensure accurate financial records and accountability.
Throughout her tenure, Mary has remained committed to providing efficient, courteous service while maintaining the highest standards of financial stewardship for the taxpayers of McCormick County. Her decades of experience, dedication to public service, and deep roots in the community continue to make her a valuable asset to McCormick County government.

💧 WHERE DOES MCCORMICK COUNTY'S WATER COME FROM? 💧

Did you know?

McCormick County does not operate a drinking water treatment plant. Instead, the County purchases treated drinking water from neighboring water providers and delivers it through the County's water distribution system to homes and businesses.

Our water is supplied by:

🚰 McCormick Commission of Public Works (CPW)
🚰 Town of Calhoun Falls
🚰 Columbia County, Georgia

These providers treat and test the water to ensure it meets all state and federal drinking water standards before it enters the County's distribution system.

Over the next few weeks, we'll share more about how water reaches your home and the partnerships that help keep clean, reliable water flowing throughout McCormick County.

On Sunday, June 21, we celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, mentors, and father figures who help shape our families and strengthen our communities.

Did you know? Father's Day became an official national holiday in 1972, although the first Father's Day celebration was held in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. The holiday was inspired by Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to honor her father, a widower who raised six children on his own.

Today, approximately 6 in 10 adult men in the United States are fathers, serving as role models, providers, teachers, coaches, and sources of strength and support for their families.

Whether it's teaching life lessons, cheering from the sidelines, offering words of wisdom, or simply being there when needed most, fathers make a lasting impact that extends far beyond their own families and into the communities they call home.

This Father's Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to thank the fathers and father figures who have helped guide, support, and inspire them throughout life's journey.

Summer officially arrives on Saturday, June 20, 2026, marking the Summer Solstice—the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere!

The Summer Solstice occurs when the sun reaches its northernmost point in the sky above the Tropic of Cancer, giving us the most daylight of any day all year.

🌞 Fun Facts About the First Day of Summer:
🔹 Longest Day, Shortest Night

June 20 brings the most daylight hours of the year. The farther north you travel, the longer the daylight lasts—some places in Alaska enjoy more than 20 hours of sunshine!

🔹 Summer Heat Comes Later
Even though this is the sunniest day of the year, it's usually not the hottest. Land and water take time to warm up, which is why July and August are often our hottest months.

🔹 The Earth's Tilt Creates the Seasons
The Earth's axis is tilted about 23.5 degrees. During the Summer Solstice, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted most directly toward the sun, bringing longer days and warmer temperatures.

🔹 A Shadowless Sun
Along the Tropic of Cancer, the sun can appear directly overhead at solar noon, causing objects to cast almost no shadow!

🌻 Did You Know?
The word solstice comes from Latin meaning "sun stands still." Around the solstice, the sun's position at sunrise and sunset changes very little from day to day, creating the appearance that it has paused in the sky.

Did you know the McCormick County Auditor's Office plays a vital role in ensuring property taxes are administered fairly and accurately for all taxpayers?

The mission of the Auditor's Office is to provide the citizens of McCormick County with accuracy, professionalism, and courtesy while ensuring all taxpayers are treated equally and in accordance with South Carolina law.

✅ What the Auditor's Office Does:
• Sets the property tax levy
• Processes appeals on real estate and personal property
• Administers taxes on:

Motor vehicles
Watercraft
Aircraft
Business personal property
Other personal property
• Administers the Homestead Exemption
• Administers Veterans Exemptions
• Assists with vehicle registrations and address changes
• Processes vehicle tax refunds
• Handles High Mileage and Vehicle Value Appeals
• Administers taxes on pleasure and business boats

❌ What the Auditor's Office Does NOT Do:
• Determine property values (Contact the Assessor's Office)
• Provide information on paid taxes (Contact the Treasurer's Office)
• Issue business licenses or Federal ID numbers (Contact the South Carolina Department of Revenue)
• Collect tax payments (Contact the Treasurer/Tax Collector's Office)
• Collect or receive license plates (Return plates to any SCDMV location)

The park in downtown McCormick will be closed on June 24 and June 25 for pressure washing and maintenance.

The park is jointly owned by the Town of McCormick and McCormick County, and we are working together to give this important public space the care and attention it needs.

This work is part of a broader effort to clean up, improve, and reinvest in the park so it can become a more attractive and active space for residents, visitors, and community events.

We appreciate the public’s patience while this work is completed.
