Getting a tetanus shot is important when cleaning up after a flood because floods often expose you to conditions that increase the risk of tetanus infection. Tetanus is caused by Clostridium tetani, a bacteria that thrives in soil, dirt, and contaminated water, especially in environments with little oxygen. Floodwaters can carry debris, soil, and sharp objects that can cause cuts or puncture wounds, providing an entry point for tetanus bacteria.
Here’s why it's particularly important after a flood:
1. Contaminated Water and Debris: Floodwater can be contaminated with all sorts of harmful bacteria, including tetanus spores. Rusty nails, wood splinters, and other debris can cause injuries that might lead to infection.
2. Increased Risk of Injury: Cleanup work often involves handling sharp objects or working in unsafe, cluttered areas. Cuts, scrapes, and punctures are common in these environments.
3. Dirty Wounds: The bacteria that cause tetanus live in soil, dust, and animal waste, all of which may be present in flood-affected areas. Even a small cut exposed to floodwater or mud can allow tetanus spores to enter the body.
4. No Cure, Only Prevention: Tetanus is a serious condition that affects the nervous system and can lead to severe muscle spasms, paralysis, and even death. Once infected, there's no cure for tetanus; it has to be prevented through vaccination.

Mold can form within 48 hours. So, the goal is to reduce the humidity and temperature around your treasures as you proceed to clean and dry them. If you do encounter extensive mold, use protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and an N95 face mask, available at most hardware stores.

⚪️Please stay in doors and get to high ground immediately if you reside in low areas! This is not a drill Perry County is experiencing a major Flood Emergency!
