Muskingum River Parkway State Park

Muskingum River Parkway State Park This is the official page for the Muskingum River Parkway State Park. The Muskingum River Parkway was designated as an Ohio State Park in 1958.

The Muskingum River Parkway State Park has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places and is recognized as the Muskingum River Navigation Historic District. Because of its size and location, the Muskingum River played an important role in Ohio’s history. Its watershed drains 8,036 square miles, which is an area equal to one-fifth of the state. The Muskingum is the longest continually

navigable river traversing Ohio, due to the river’s locks and dams. In 2001, the Muskingum River locking system was designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. This designation recognizes the lock system as one of the nation’s great engineering marvels, along with the Golden Gate Bridge, Empire State Building, and Hoover Dam. In 2007, the Muskingum River Parkway was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Muskingum River Navigation Historic District. The locks help boats safely bypass ten dams on the Muskingum River from Zanesville south to the Ohio River at Marietta. These locks are operated at no charge for recreational boats. Ten of the eleven locks still function— the northernmost lock, Ellis #11, is no longer in operation but offers a campground. The remaining locks have a variety of amenities and many communities along the Muskingum River offer recreational and sight-seeing opportunities for boaters and non-boaters alike.

"The Ohio Department of Natural Resources recently
completed a modernization of the McConnelsville Lock 7 dam.
Because this updated structure passes water more efficiently than
the old dam, the local flow dynamics around the streamgage have
changed. To ensure the forecast remains as accurate as possible,
the National Weather Service and the United States Geological Survey are currently recalibrating the rating curve used to translate river flow into forecasted river heights. We would be pausing everyday forecasts while this recalibration takes place.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU:
* For Boaters and Recreational Users: 3-to-5 day forecasts for
normal, everyday water levels will be temporarily unavailable.
However, you will still be able to view current river level
observations at all times.

* For Public Safety: The NWS continuously monitors river conditions.
Should the probability of a high water event increase, river
forecasts will immediately resume along with any appropriate
Flood Watches and Warnings."

The sights and sounds of a lower valve opening on a frozen river ❄️🌊

With the lock iced over, the current is pushed lower, allowing water to move through the open valves and clear sediment more efficiently. It’s a powerful reminder that even in winter, the river system is still hard at work—just in a quieter, frost-covered way.

Dreaming of warmer days and making summer plans? Start with a peaceful riverside getaway at Ellis Lock & Dam on the Muskingum River!

This remote campground is tucked along the water and offers 19 non-electric campsites, each with a picnic table and fire ring, plus access to water and restrooms. The lock is non-operational, making it a great spot for tent campers or small RVs looking to unplug and enjoy a quieter side of Muskingum River State Park.

Spend your days fishing, boating, and paddling —and your evenings relaxing by the fire under the stars. Pets are welcome, and the setting is ideal for anyone craving solitude and scenic river views and sounds.

The coffer dam at Lowell Lock is in place, and the upper doors are removed. Crews are now assessing the full scope of repairs. The bell valve, used to control water flow in and out of the lock, is seeing the light of day for the first time in decades. And hatch marks cut into the stone by masons 189 years ago are a testament to the history and craftsmanship of the Muskingum River Lock System.

The lock is currently closed for construction.
