🐾 Pet Preparedness Tip of the Day 🐾

Did you know that many pets become separated from their owners during emergencies?

One of the simplest things you can do today is make sure your pet’s identification is up to date.

✅ Check that collar tags are readable
✅ Verify your contact information is current with your microchip provider
✅ Keep a recent photo of your pet on your phone
✅ Take a photo of yourself with your pet to help prove ownership if you’re separated

A few minutes today could make all the difference in bringing your pet home tomorrow.

🐾 PET PREPAREDNESS MONTH 🐾

Your pets are family—make sure they’re part of your emergency plan.

When disasters strike, having a plan and supplies ready can make all the difference for your furry companions.

✔ Build a pet emergency kit with food, water, medications, and comfort items
✔ Keep vaccination and medical records accessible
✔ Ensure ID tags and microchip information are current
✔ Identify pet-friendly shelters and lodging options before an emergency
✔ Keep a recent photo of your pet in case you become separated

🚨 Remember: If you need to evacuate, take your pets with you. Never leave them behind during an emergency.

Take a few minutes today to prepare so your entire family—pets included—is ready for tomorrow.

McConnell AFB Emergency Management is committed to helping our community stay prepared for any situation.

🌪️ When the Tornado Siren Sounds, Take Action Immediately

When outdoor warning sirens sound, a tornado is possible or occurring in your area. Do not wait to see the tornado. Take shelter right away.

🏠 Go to the safest place available

* Basement or storm shelter
* Interior room on the lowest floor
* Stay away from windows and exterior walls

🛡️ Protect Yourself

* Get low to the ground
* Cover your head and neck with your arms, a mattress, or blankets
* Bring pets with you if possible

📻 Stay Informed

* Monitor local weather alerts, NOAA Weather Radio, television, or trusted weather apps

⏳ Stay in Shelter Until the All Clear Is Announced

* Do not leave just because the sirens stop
* Wait for official confirmation from emergency management or the National Weather Service that the threat has passed

🚗 Remember

* Never try to outrun a tornado in your vehicle
* Do not shelter under overpasses
* Have a family emergency plan in place before severe weather strikes

🌪️ Your safety is our priority. Know your safe place, act quickly, and stay sheltered until authorities announce it is safe to come out.

🧠 Take care of yourself:
• Stay connected
• Keep simple routines
• Limit news exposure

🇺🇸 For military communities, constant change and added stress can make recovery even harder—give yourself grace.

On April 26, 1991, Sedgwick and Butler counties were changed forever. A catastrophic 46-mile tornado tore through south-central Kansas for roughly an hour and a half. The tornado passed directly over McConnell, narrowly missing ten B-1B bombers worth $280 million each, two of which were armed with nuclear warheads. At peak F5 intensity, it attacked the Golden Spur Mobile Home Park in Andover, destroying 205 of 244 homes and killing 13 people. On top of that, the town's single warning siren failed, forcing police to drive through neighborhoods and the park itself to alert residents. The final numbers when it finally dissipated were 17 people killed, injured over 200, and caused an estimated $300 million in damage. It was the catalyst to create the robust Emergency Management programs in the area that we know today.
