It’s , and today we’re looking back at a staple of the 184 Wing’s heritage: The Red Hats!

The red hat tradition goes all the way back to October 1, 1962, when the unit reorganized as the 184th Tactical Fighter Group. During that time, our aircraft tail flashes were changed from yellow to red. To match our new look, red ball caps were introduced and authorized for wear with the utility uniform. Those original hats featured a simple, proud “184” in white numbers on the front.

In the first photo, you can see members of the 184th rocking their red hats after a qualification flight in 1975.

In the second photo, you’ll see our 184th Wing Student Flight keeping the legacy alive in 2017.

Today, that tradition continues. Every new member who joins the 184th Wing receives a red hat, which they proudly wear on drill weekends as part of Student Flight until they graduate and return from Basic Military Training.

It’s a symbol of where we started and the future of our Wing.

Past and present 184th members, do you still have your original red hat?

First Sergeants from the 184th Wing convened at Warren Riverpark in Derby, Kansas, for a dedicated leadership sabbatical, March 9-10, 2026. The two-day, offsite retreat gave the “Shirts” a valuable opportunity to collaborate on readiness initiatives, share leadership strategies, and ensure they are fully equipped to support our service members.

First sergeants serve as the principal enlisted advisors to their respective commander on all matters concerning the health, morale, welfare, and discipline of the enlisted force. As a critical position in the leadership triad, they ensure the enforcement of standards, advocate for service member well-being, and maintain the operational readiness of the unit.

Meet Airman First Class Jacob Dieter, our May Airman of the Month! A native of Augusta, Kansas, A1C Jacob Dieter serves as a Water and Fuel Systems Maintenance Specialist with the 184th Civil Engineer Squadron. His impact spans from local installation support to international missions. During a recent deployment for training to Aviano Air Base, Italy, he played a key role in constructing new office spaces and operational facilities for the 31st Civil Engineer Squadron. At home station, his quick response and technical skills have resolved numerous maintenance challenges, including recovering a flooded 22nd Air Refueling Wing facility by executing a critical flushometer changeout and repairing various plumbing systems across the base.

A1C Dieter’s dedication to service began long before his enlistment in the Kansas Air National Guard. An Eagle Scout, former high school student-athlete, and musician, he developed a strong foundation of leadership early on. He continues to build on that foundation at Kansas State University, where he balances his military service with pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering and working as a student supervisor for the Department of Housing and Dining.

His commitment extends deeply into his local community. Through his church's "Love Augusta" volunteer initiative, A1C Dieter dedicates his time to helping residents in need. His recent projects include building a wheelchair ramp, installing a fence and garden for an elderly resident, clearing brush, and helping restore a flood-damaged church basement.

Whether he is maintaining critical infrastructure for the Air Force or serving his local community, A1C Dieter consistently demonstrates a positive impact, a strong work ethic, and a relentless drive to help others.

In March, Airmen assigned to the 184th Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group attended Senior Night at Victory Village, a group home for high school age girls.

The unit members conducted a flag folding ceremony and spent the evening cheering on the ladies' basketball team. After the game, the Airmen spent time with the players over supper.

"You just can't beat an opportunity to support these young ladies who are dealing with many of life's struggles and in turn being blessed by their gratitude towards us for showing up and being there for them," said Chief Master Sgt. Bisterfeldt, senior enlisted leader for the 129th Intelligence Squadron.

Airmen assigned to the 184th Logistics Readiness Squadron, 184th Wing, traveled to the New Mexico high desert to push their physical and mental limits during the 37th Annual Bataan Memorial Death March, March 21, 2026.

The grueling event honors American and Filipino service members who defended the Philippine Islands during World War II and were subsequently forced into the harrowing march of 1942.

For the Airmen of the 184th Wing, the 26.2-mile trek at the White Sands Missile Range offered a solemn opportunity to build camaraderie while paying tribute to service members.

Airmen from the Kansas Air National Guard’s 134th Air Control Squadron played a central role in Exercise Sentry South (Savannah) 26.1, Jan. 20–30, 2026. They provided the command-and-control backbone for large scale counter air operations during the two-week training event held at the Savannah Combat Readiness Training Center.

The exercise brought together 1,745 service members and 86 aircraft from 54 units across 26 states, creating a complex training environment designed to prepare joint forces for high-end conflict.

The 184th Wing hosted its two-day Non-Commissioned Officers Induction Course on March 9-10, equipping emerging leaders with essential skills to lead the force. Airmen received impactful presentations from the 184th Wing command team and engaged in crucial topics like resource management, developmental opportunities, and navigating difficult conversations. The course also included a public speaking exercise, helping the NCOs to improve on their briefing skills.

A special thank you to the course facilitators, Staff Sgt. Callie Simpson, 184th Comptroller Flight, and Tech Sgt. Brian Norris, 161st Intelligence Squadron, who ran and organized the entire course!

Meet Senior Airman Angela Hargett, our April Airman of the Month!

As a front-line cyber defender with the 127th Cyberspace Operations Squadron, Senior Airman Hargett ensures the integrity of warfighter communications. Her expertise was critical during Operation HIDDEN TORNADO, where she analyzed over 200 million data logs daily to hunt for network threats. She also led a significant technical upgrade for her unit by deploying 80 new computers, which boosted mission processing power by 130% and directly enhanced the capabilities of 25 operators.

As an emerging leader and mentor, Hargett, a recent Airman Leadership School graduate, immediately put her training into practice. She serves as a student flight instructor, actively shaping the careers of junior Airmen, and she created a monthly cyber intelligence newsletter to ensure wing readiness during a manning gap.

Hargett also maintains a high standard of personal excellence. She recently completed her bachelor’s degree in computer science and achieved an "excellent" on her physical fitness assessment. By taking on additional duties, such as managing a building remodel and leading group PT sessions, she demonstrates a level of commitment and readiness that sets the standard!
