It sure is hot! Sharing this along with a reminder that the historic house at Hampton is NOT climate-controlled, so be prepared for the heat if you are planning to take a tour. (If the heat index is so high that it is unsafe, tours may be shortened or canceled--call the park to get more up to date info)!

⚠️⚠️CAUTION: Park roads are currently very dry due to the drought, so the sand is very loose. Park staff are doing their best to mitigate it but until we get some nice, compacting rain, please use caution driving inside the park!⚠️⚠️

In honor of Black History Month, the Village Museum honors Robert Blake, the first African American to receive the Medal of Honor!

Robert Blake was enslaved on Blake’s Plantation (Santee Coastal Reserve) in St. James Santee Parish (McClellanville community).

In late June of 1862, Union naval forces conducted raids along the South Santee River. They freed approximately 400 enslaved people, among them was Robert Blake, who later enlisted in the US Navy.

On December 25, 1863, during the Battle of Legareville on the Stono River near John’s Island SC. For his Valor, Blake was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1864, making him the first African American to receive the Medal of Honor!

To learn more about the forgotten history of our Parish, come visit us at the Village Museum.

James Brown at Sesquicentennial State Park, 1977

In 1977, James Brown brought life and soul to Sesquicentennial State Park’s amphitheater, where he performed two concerts. Before the shows, he talked to the newspaper about his new album, “Mutha’s Nature.” Leaning against the chain link fence of the amphitheater, surrounded by Sesqui’s pine forests, he explained: “This is what I’m into now—we’ve got to work on saving the environment.” This Black History Month, join us in celebrating the Godfather of Soul’s connection to State Parks.
