We know summer storms can appear at random. Playing in the rain always seems like a fun harmless ideal, especially when the kids are already in the pool. There are still some risk if that rain is coming from a storm rolling in.

Be sure to check the weather forecast for the day and have the weather alerts able to notify you in case mother nature decides to throw a curve ball at your afternoon plans.

Lightning can strike miles away, and water is one of the most dangerous places to be during a storm. If you're in the pool and you hear thunder or see lightening do these steps below: 👇

• Get out of the water immediately — even one rumble means it’s unsafe.
• Seek shelter indoors — not under trees, umbrellas, or shade structures.
• Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning outside.
• Never shelter under trees — they attract lightning.

🛟 A secure pool barrier is one of the strongest layers of protection we can give our families — especially young children who are naturally curious and quick on their feet. Most pool emergencies happen during non‑swim times, when adults don’t expect kids to be near the water. That’s why a properly installed and maintained barrier matters so much. 🛟

Make sure your pool has a four‑sided fence that separates the water from the house and yard. Gates should be self‑closing, self‑latching, and open away from the pool. Keep latches high — at least 54 inches — and check them often to make sure they’re working properly. Even small gaps or loose hinges can create big risks.

Take a few minutes this week to walk your fence line, test your gate, and remove anything a child could climb. These simple steps help prevent tragedies and keep McCalla families safe all summer long.

No phones, no distractions, no stepping away “just for a second.” Barriers and locked gates are essential too, especially for homes with young children. And remember: floaties and inflatable toys are fun, but they are not life‑saving devices.
