McCall Weather Your LOCAL source for weather in and around McCall, Idaho! More than just a forecast... About Me

Hello! My name is Todd Cook. Louis, Missouri. I loved it! S. Todd

I have created this page to share my passion for weather, and also provide a community service to those that live near McCall, Idaho. My love of weather started while growing up in St. When storms came, I would run to the couch and peer out the window to watch the swirling clouds and bolts of lightning. Even though sometimes I was scared, I was also fascinated with the power of weather, and how/wh

y it happened. As I grew older, my father (who was a science teacher) would tell me the names of the clouds, and what they meant. Soon, I was studying on my own and would begin recording weather in my early teens. I also did my own weather summaries in my little weather office with a weather radio and the weather channel always on!
In high school and college, I continued my formal education (with an emphasis on Geography and Meteorology/Climate). For a while, I lived in Florida and got to experience a few tropical storms, and I also started “chasing” storms when severe weather threatened.
After college, I moved to the high country of Colorado for a winter and got to experience my first mountain weather climate. Soon thereafter, my family and I moved to California, and I got a job with the U. Forest Service and lived and worked in the mountains of Southern California. (Don’t laugh, some of the biggest snow storms I’ve ever experienced were there)! While my job was a ranger in the visitor center much of the time, I was still able to get out and weather watch while doing other assignments. I soon started producing my own specialized for the forest, at the visitor center I operated. I also took daily weather readings, and communicated regularly with the National Weather Service on local conditions where information/observations were scarce. During my 13 yr career with the USFS (in California and Washington State) I participated in local fires, often being staffed as a lookout, in addition to acting in an advisory position for weather/fire behavior information. I also worked closely with local ski areas on snow reports and other information.
In 2013, I “retired” from the USFS, and my wife and I started a multi-year journey of living in some amazing places! First, we moved from Leavenworth, Washington to Alta, Wyoming. It is there that I began doing my own weather forecasts on the page Teton Valley Weather, and was a local weather blogger for Teton Valley News. It was quite exciting living only a few miles from Grand Targhee resort, and seeing 500” of snow fall in the winter! My good friend Bruce took over that page in 2015 when my wife and I moved to Montana to “try it on”, and I began forecasting for the Flathead Valley. However, while we loved living in Whitefish (and near Glacier National Park), two years of endless gray winters were enough for us (we didn’t mind the snow and cold, however) so we moved to Pagosa Springs, CO. I forecasted for 3 years at Pagosa Weather. It was a challenging place to forecast, with the San Juan Mountains to our north/east and the San Juan Basin/Desert to our South/West. In fall of 2019, we decided we missed the Northern Rockies (and worried about the persistent drought conditions in the 4 corners area), so we moved to the McCall/New Meadows area, where we believe we have found our home for a long time! I took the past year observing the weather, but now I am ready to dive in. That being said, I know I have my work cut out for me as it was also quite challenging figuring out the local weather patterns last winter! My experience and education:

Some other things to know about me!
I love to snowboard, so you will see many updates and possible video reports and photos from Brundage, Tamarack and Little Ski Hill. (and other areas around our communities). I am NOT an early morning person, so you won’t be getting weather forecasts/updates generally until mid to late morning. While I do get up earlier than that, It it usually takes me up to an hour (or more) to w**d through forecast models and other data, upload images and write up a narrative . (That’s not to say that if we have significant weather conditions, I won’t make exceptions). I will do plenty of evening updates, so you will know what to expect when you wake up in the morning. During active weather, I will attempt to provide updates as often as possible. During inactive weather, you will get less updates.
I am doing this on my own time, and am not being compensated for it. While I do have a sense of responsibility to provide weather to the community, I will periodically take some vacations and time off, however I still try my best to provide information during those times if severe weather threatens.I have a good relationship with the National Weather Service Boise office. This page should NOT be considered a replacement for them. They are the authority for all official forecasts, watches, warnings, etc. They do an awesome job covering a very large, dynamic forecast area. My page is to be considered an additional source for more detailed, local weather in the McCall area. While I will provide forecasts for the area, the main focus will be on the details behind the forecast.
I love personal feedback and participation. Please contribute your reports/photos, discussion to the page! Thanks for following my page, and let's talk about the weather!

Wednesday, 5/13/26 - 9:35 PM

Good evening,

My new shoulder installation went well today. In honor of the 45 mph wind gust at the airport (and my implant's slight resemblance to a tornado), I've decided to name it Tom Twister.

Rain today was variable and light... ranging from as little as trace, to .13". With winds dying down, temps will drop into the low to mid 30s tonight, except upper 20s in the coldest spots. Some patchy fog is possible in the AM, particularily in the Meadows Valley where the higher total/more moisture was.

Mainly sunny and cool the rest of the week, and even colder temps over the weeked, with a small-ish chance of rain/snow showers, especially Sat. Night/ Sunday. 😄. Overnight lows will continue to wobble around freezing, and possibly mid-upper 20s Sunday/ mondy nights. 😨

I'll try and get another update out on Friday PM.

Have a good rest of the week,
Todd

Tuesday: 5/12/26 - 10 AM

Good Morning,

A few changes to the forecast...

Near record highs still expected today. (low to mid 80s- McCall).. Slight chance of a shower/t-storm overnight tonight.

The incoming low/cold front is still expected tomorrow, but now is forecast to arrive earlier, along with less precipitation, (as the core of the low stays further to our north). Rainfall amounts are now expected to stay under 1/4", with highest amounts in the north. Sorry!

Rain chances now look best Wednesday AM, decreasing as we head into the PM. The chance of strong storms has decreased significantly, but a few rumbles are still possible. The bigger story could be winds... they'll pick up along and behind the front, starting from the south, then veering to the SW/W. Gusts over 30 mph are possible. Temps tomorrow will be cooler, "only" topping out in the upper 60s/low 70s.

Thursday now looks partly/mostly sunny, dry and cool, with perhaps some breezy NW winds. Temperatures will be in the low/mid 60s.

Friday-Weekend... cool air continues to fill in, as a secondary (weak) front passes through Saturday, with slight chance of showers.

Highs will drop from around 60 Friday, to upper 40s/mid 50s Sat/ Sunday. Overnight lows will fall into the 30's Wed-Friday, and then down into the upper 20's-low 30s over the weekend... so warn the plants!

Again, I'll probably be unavailable tomorrow for updates... but Rascal will fill in (if he can stay awake).

Have a good one,
Todd

April Climate Summary for McCall:

April was warmer, but wetter than avgerage for most of our area.

We are currently near "average" for precipitation for our water year (Oct 1 - Sept 30)... however, we have to keep in mind that much of that water was not in our snowpack, which has drastic effects on water supply, fuel moisture levels, cranky plants and irritable forecasters.

Snow Survey/Water Supply for Idaho issued May 7, 2026.

https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDAFARMERS/bulletins/415e96a

May Outlook: Warmer and drier than average was the latest forecast issued on May 1. That will likely hold true, even though we may get some rain this week. Longer range outlooks 1-2 weeks generally show below avg rainfall, however they do show decent chances of "near normal" during this period... which would be welcome.

Latest Seaonsal outlooks were issued on April 16... the new ones will be updated on May 16. In the meantime, here is the latest info... (hint, drier and warmer this summer is likely). https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/long_range/seasonal.php?lead=2

El Nino Update:

Still looking like a strong, to very strong El Nino this winter. In most historical cases, this would mean warmer and drier than normal for us... however, there are exceptions, and I'll start talking about that later this summer. Here is the latest Enso (Nino) update:https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/lanina/enso_evolution-status-fcsts-web.pdf

Still expecting near record highs tomorrow, and possibly Wednesday. Rain chances/t-storms Wed PM- Thursday with 1/4"-1/2" still possible.

Feel free to ask questions... I put this together very quickly since I'm short on time right now, and wanted to get it our before I didn't at all. 😁

Sunday 5/10/26 - Mother's Day! 9:53 PM

Near Record temperatures on Tuesday/Wednesday... chance t-storms Wed/PM, then cooler/showers for a couple days.

Good evening,

Hope everyone had a nice weekend, and especially the mom's today. The weather was pretty nice, even though we had some high clouds at times along with some breezy afternoons.

The clouds today/tonight ahead are a weak trough/cold front that will pass through overnight, and bring in slightly cooler air on Monday. Today McCall hit 75º, and tomorrow the forecast is for 73º.

Strong high pressure quickly rebuilds on Tuesday, allowing rapid warming, with everyone climbing into the 80s. McCall's record high is 84º, and that's the current forecast high. There's a chance the Meadows Valley could hit 90º. Yeah, rediculous. 🤒

The good news... cooler temps will arrive later in the week as a trough approaches from the NW. Ahead of the system, strong southerly flow on Wednesday wil pump in some moisture from the south... (quite similar to a monsoon pattern we sometimes see later in th summer). Wednesday PM, there's a decent chance of some rain. However, with such warm temps (again, low to mid 80s), moisture and instability along the trough... strong t-storms are possible on Wednesday evening. Cooler air, along with showers are possible on Thursday, continuing into Friday.

Several models show 1/4"- 1/2" of rain with this system, although amounts will be variable.

Temperatures will cool into the 70's Thursday, and then 60's Friday/Saturday. Lows will mainly be in the 40's, although upper 30s are possible Tuesday AM.

I'll try to have another update Tuesday PM before I go under the knife on Wednesday. Thanks for your well wishes!

Todd

Warm and dry Mother's Day weekend

Good Evening,

Pretty benign weather for us this past week, with mild and breezy weather. Meanwhile, parts of Colorado (front range northern mountains) picked up nearly 3 Feet of snow over the last couple days!

The weekend...

It looks like high pressure will hold over the weekend, and in fact, build in stronger Sunday and beyond. Temperatures will be in the mid 60s to low 70s on Friday... but rocket into the upper 70's to low 80s on Sunday and into next week. (Remember, the average high for this time of year in McCall is around 60º). 😒 Overnight lows will mainly be in the mid 30's to low 40s.

There will be good mixing in the atmosphere over the next few days, so afternoon winds are possible, although they should stay under 25 mph, at the most.

I plan to have a bit of an April summary out sometime in the next few days. I've just been busy this past week doing yard work, and getting ready for my new shoulder that is expected to arrive (and be installed) next Wednesday. 😎

Have a great weekend, and Happy Mother's Day to the mommies!

Todd

Water V***r Satellite Image:

Strong high pressure (blue H) will build/expand over the weekend and into next week, creating very warm and dry weather. (The red/red orange is dry air). A pretty impressive spinner (low pressure) system out in the Gulf Of Alaska... that will stay away from us.

Sunday 5/3/26 - 8:45 PM

Warm and dry this week...

Good Evening,

It was a beautiful weekend, with the temperature reaching 72º today in McCall. That's 15º above "normal"... (The record high is 81º). If you had a keen eye, you might have seen a 'thunderstorm' anvil to our south over the Boise Mtns around 5:30 PM.

The coming week now looks dry, as the system I previously mentioned will stay to our south. A couple model still show some very isolated showers/storms the next two days, but the chance of those developing and/or putting out any precipitation is less than 10%.

Temperatures will stay well above normal this week, although there'll be a slight cool-down (3-5 º) over the next couple days as that departing low to our south will briefly weaken the ridge that is in place. iIt may also be a bit breezy on Monday and Tuesday due to the ridge building back in. Otherwise, lots of sun and temps bumping back into the 70s for everyone. Overnight lows will be mostly in the mid 30's to mid 40s.

An early peak at Mother's Day Weekend... temps remain mild, with a small chance of showers.

Have a great week,
Todd

Thursday 4/30/26 - 9:23 PM

Dry and mild weekend...

Good evening,

The trough that's been hanging around through most of the week that's brought cool-ish weather and scattered showers, is finally moving east. High pressure is building in, and will continue to strengthen over the weekend. This means continued warming temperatures, and dry conditions.

There will be some high clouds around, especially Sunday... as a low pressure system moves inland well to our south. Overall, winds will be light, although it's that time of year where afternoon breezes will kick up each day, perhaps gusting to around 20 mph. Also, there's a few RX burns going on, so areas of smoke are likely at times.

As for temperatures... highs Friday/Saturday will be in the mid to upper 60s in McCall/Long Valley, with upper 60s to low 70s in the Meadows Valley. Overnight lows will be mostly in the 30s. Temps jump up afew more degrees on Sunday, reaching near 70 in McCall, and mid 70s in the MV.

It stays mild next week, but that low to our south may advect some moisture NE into our area, bringing a chance of PM showers/storms.

If anything changes, I'll pop in... otherwise my next update will be Sunday PM.

Have a great Friday/weekend,
Todd

04/27/2026

Sunday 4/26/26 - 8:45 PM

A continuing chance of scattered/isolated PM showers/t-storms through midweek, with a slow warming trend.

Good evening,

It was a chilly weekend, with overnight lows in the teens/low 20s (only a few degrees from records), and daytime highs in the 40s. We'll see warming temperatures this week, but it will be gradual.

Cool, slightly unstable NW flow continues through Wednesday. Residual moisture, along with a couple ripples moving through will be enough for a continued chance of mainly afternoon/evening showers and isolated t-storms. Any measureable precipitation should be light. Snow levels will continue to range from about 4,500-5,500'.

By late week, warmer temperatures really kick in, with highs climbing well into the 60s. Overnight lows will still be quite cool through Wednesday, mainly in the 20s. Even with shower chances, we'll still see some sun.. especially, later in the week. Areas of AM fog are also possible, too.

Longer range generally shows above average temperatures. We may see another system toward next weekend, but there's very little model consistency at this time.

Have a good week,
Todd

Friday 4/24/26 - 6:10 PM

A coolish weekend, with a few of snow/rain showers.

Good Evening, and Happy Friday!

My Coffee Porter is cracked, so lets get into it!

A bit of a surprise last night, as snow piled up to over 2" on the McCall Snowcam. I expected up to an inch, but cold temps and lack of sun really helped. Overall, this past storm system/s was pretty decent, with liquid amounts in the 1/3"-1.5" range.. snowfall tallied up to 3" in the valleys, and 6-14" in the mountains. Good Stuff, and excellent for our continued cool/wet spring!

Clearing skies/decreasing winds will lead to a very cold night tonight. Lows will drop to near 20 in McCall, with the coldest spots dipping into the upper teens.

At least partly sunny on Saturday, but we're still on the edge of a slightly moist/NW flow... So, isolated to scattered snow/rain showers are possible, mainly in the afternoon. Amounts, if any... will be light. Temps will still be cool, but not cold... upper 40s to low 50s. Winds should be much lighter than the past couple days, so the nip alert has been lifted. Lows tomorrow night will be slightly warmer, mainly in the 20s.

Sunday... A system to our south will skirt by, and may be close enough for a few more scattered showers... however, we should still see some sunshine. Temps will range form the upper 40's to mid 50s. Winds should will be relatively light.

Next week... We'll remain slightly unsettled early... then dry and warmer. Low/moderate chances of rain/snow showers into Tuesday. Temps will be in the 40s/50s. Lows will be mostly in the 20s. High pressure looks to build mid-late week, with warming temperatures (50s and low 60s) and dry conditions.

Hey... have a great weekend!

Wednesday 4/22/26 - 9:32 PM

Good evening,

Rain has changed back over to snow in McCall this evening, as a secondary front pushes through. Precipitation will wind down by midnight, but a trace to 2" could accumulate before then.

A couple weak disturbances in the developing northerly flow will drop south into ID/MT tomorrow and into Friday for more scattered snow showers. Any accumulation in the valleys will probably be light, while the mountains could see up to a couple/few inches. Very cold Friday and Saturday AM... prepare the plants!

Todd

Over 9" of snow today at Brundage!
