Dane County District One EMS

Dane County District One EMS Dane County District One EMS - Serving Black Earth and Mazomanie - Dane County, Wisconsin

About Us: Dane County District One EMS was formed in 1977 when the growth of this area made it apparent that a real need existed for a service to provide emergency basic life-support, care, and transport to an advanced life-support facility. This service was designed to provide such aid with all due care and treatment en route. Since the beginning, volunteers have proudly staffed Rescue 28 and ser

ved its 6500 residents. District One is comprised of six municipalities in an area of some 85 sq. miles in the northwest section of Dane County; it includes the villages and townships of Black Earth and Mazomanie, along with sections of Berry and Vermont townships. District One EMS is licensed and its members are trained to the highest basic level of the Wisconsin Emergency Medical Technician. Nearly 400 calls are responded to each year with transport to five different emergency rooms within a 25-mile radius. Two Med Flight Helicopters from the University Hospital in Madison are available to transport the most seriously ill or injured patients. Six appointed board members govern District One EMS, one from each municipality, and oversee the daily operations of the District Director.

Say goodbye to backed-up traffic and red lights. We are redefining rapid response in Black Earth and Mazomanie!

We are incredibly excited to unveil the newest additions to our growing fleet. Fast-Arriving Response Team drones will now be located in each village. FART 1 will be stationed at our home base in Mazomanie, while its sister unit, FART 2, will be based at the Black Earth Fire Station. These incredible pieces of technology will drastically improve response times to emergency scenes, while also providing expanded transport options to area hospitals outside of Dane County.

Each drone will be capable of transporting an EMS provider from the station to the location of an emergency—including remote areas of our district—in 90 seconds or less. Once on scene and after the patient is stabilized, the EMS provider will be able to secure the patient to the drone using a harness and assist with initial lift-off. Patients will subsequently have limited control over their transport, including the ability to select their desired transport route. Direct routes will optimize speed to the selected destination, while indirect routes will prioritize transport comfort and allow patients to enjoy the breath-taking scenery that western Dane County has to offer.

Rest assured, if a patient requires ongoing or advanced care, an ambulance will still be dispatched to the scene for traditional transport.

March 29, 2026***PRESS RELEASE***SUBJECT: Structure Fire in the Town of Mazomanie
DATE OF INCIDENT: March 28, 2026
At approximately 1806 CST on Saturday, March 28, 2026, the Black Earth Fire Department was dispatched to the 10 thousand block of Laws Drive in the Town of Mazomanie to a Delta level structure fire at a rural home. Due to the nature of this call, Dane County District One EMS (Mazomanie) and Mazomanie Fire Department were automatically paged to respond. First units arrived on scene approximately 8 min from time of page and reported fire showing from the west side of the home along with wood piles and foliage burning. Local Dane County Sherriff Office deputies on scene assisted evacuating the residents who were attempting to stop the fire spread. One resident was transported to a local hospital for suspected smoke inhalation. Black Earth Fire Department initially requested Cross Plains Fire Department to respond and upgraded their request to a mutual aid box alarm (MABAS) to the first level upon arrival. BEFD was assisted with firefighting operations, water supply, and EMS transport by these mutual aid departments. Initial fires were extinguished at approximately 1851 (+35min) and operations were continued to search and contain remaining hot spots. Initial reports and investigation indicate that the fire originated outside the home and had spread across foliage and wood piles adjacent to the home and ultimately inside the residence. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will be conducting further investigation of the source and conditions of the fire origination. Significant damage to the home has resulted in 3 persons and 1 pet to be displaced.Black Earth Fire Department would like to thank the following departments/agencies for their assistance: Dane County District One EMS, Mazomanie Fire Department, Dane County Sheriffs Office, Dane County Communications Center, Cross Plains Fire Department, Sauk City Fire Department, Middleton EMS, Middleton Fire Department, Arena Fire Department, Mount Horeb Fire Department, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Alliant Energy.
