A 31-year-old man is facing a robbery charge in connection with robbing a teenager of the necklaces he wore while walking in Chicago’s South Loop neighborhood.

At approximately 4:15 p.m. on June 9, Sheriff’s Police were flagged down by a witness in the 1200 block of South Wabash, near Sheriff’s Police’s South Loop command post and learned the teen was walking with his girlfriend when a group of men began making comments to her. A man then grabbed the teen’s neck, took the two necklaces the victim was wearing, and gave them to another person in the group. Officers located a man, identified as Keith Crist, who fit the description of the offender. Crist was taken into custody after initially resisting arrest. Witnesses identified Crist as the person who took the jewelry and later that day, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved a Class 2 robbery charge against him. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of battery and resisting arrest.

Crist, of Chicago Heights, was ordered to Cook County Jail custody on June 10 following his initial court appearance at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse.

The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A 42-year-old Chicago man is facing multiple felony charges in connection with an attempted sexual assault.

At approximately 3:45 p.m. on June 4, Sheriff’s Police responded to a parking lot in the 4800 block of South Central Avenue in unincorporated Stickney Township. They learned the victim had been in the car with her AA sponsor, Adan Castellanos-Rubio, who appeared to be intoxicated and tried to sexually assault her. They also learned the victim’s toddler was in the backseat, and that they could not leave the vehicle until Castellanos-Rubio parked in the lot and passed out. Officers found Castellanos-Rubio unconscious in the car, smelling of alcohol, and they also found open container of alcohol in the vehicle.

Officers took Castellanos-Rubio into custody. After further investigation, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged him on June 5 with criminal sexual abuse, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, aggravated kidnapping, and unlawful restraint. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, and child endangerment.

He was ordered to Cook County Jail custody on June 6 following his initial court appearance at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse.

The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Two people are facing burglary charges after wipes were swiped from a freight container.

At approximately 2:50 a.m. on June 4, Sheriff’s Police were working with Norfolk Southern Railroad Police on a cargo theft prevention operation when drone footage showed a person entering a freight container near the 1700 block of 103d Street in Chicago, taking products from it, carrying it through a hole in a fence, and placing them in a minivan. With the drones providing location information, officers found the minivan, and took the driver, identified as 53-year-old Sharon Hill, into custody. Drone footage also showed the person who had been entering the freight container crouching near the fence line. One of the officers found him hiding in the brush. The man, identified as 42-year-old Quinton Cole, tried to flee, but ran into other officers, who took him to custody. Officers found approximately 40 cases of Clorox disinfecting wipes in the minivan. The wipes were identified as the same ones taken from the burglarized freight container.

Later that day, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved felony charges against Cole and Hill. They were also charged with a misdemeanor count of trespassing on railroad property. Both were ordered released from custody on June 5 following their initial court appearances at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse.

The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
