HYDRANT FLUSHING NOTICE
April 21 – June 5, 2026

The Mayville Water Utility will be flushing fire hydrants and mains for the semi-annual pressure, flow and maintenance check. Hydrants will be flushed April 21th through

June 5th from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. dependent upon weather.

Flushing of the water mains is conducted by opening the fire hydrants. The purpose of flushing is to remove sediment and mineral deposits that settle on the bottom of the water mains. The City of Mayville flushes 31 miles of water main, which allows us to not only remove any sediment that has accumulated in the mains, but to also verify the proper operation of hydrants and valves and maintain firefighting capabilities.

Although this flushing is essential to provide water quality and prevent long-term sedimentation and discoloration issues, it can cause short-term discoloration as the sediment is disturbed due to the higher water flows.
When sediment gets stirred up in the water system, the resulting discoloration will typically last approximately 2-4 hours or less. After this time, the sediment will settle back out, and the water will become clear. You can speed up the process by turning on the cold water tap at full pressure nearest where the water enters your home, such as a basement laundry tub, or a first-floor sink, and allowing the water to run until it is clear.

If you have any questions concerning fire hydrant flushing, please call 387-7906 or e-mail [email protected].

On Monday, 10/27, at 10:30 a.m., the utility will be conducting smoke testing in the area of 615 Kekoskee Street. Non-toxic smoke, similar to that used on movie sets, is being used to locate leaks, breaks, and defects in the sewer system. Staff will be walking around the area on the test day to look for signs of smoke.

There is a small chance that the non-toxic smoke may enter your house. It is harmless to people, pets, and plants and dissipates within 15-20 minutes. To prepare for the test, you may pour 1 gallon of water into basement floor drains and unused sinks. Entry to your house is not required. Homeowners do not need to be home.

For informational purposes, this video details the process used to smoke test: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XepjMRgiXYM.
