As big names in adult beverages continue to hop on the bourbon train, All American Whiskey recommends five smaller brands to support instead (including yours truly).

I mean, maybe it's good. But there are so many small labels trying their damndest to make insanely great bourbon. They deserve your attention. Here's five of them.

Thank you to Bourbon Veach for including us - and Distiller John Pogue - in this article about six must-visit distilleries outside of Louisville.

Limited availability beginning Thursday, Dec. 3! Available exclusively in our tasting room, Belle of Maysville is our newest release and an original Pogue Family recipe.

A 100% wheat malt recipe (to our knowledge, Belle of Maysville is the only 100% wheat malt whisky produced), this six year old single malt whisky is non chill filtered at 114 proof. Notes of confectioners sugar, orange zest, tea and mixed nuts.

Due to limited availability, there is a two bottle per person limit and with current COVID restrictions, reservations are required. To schedule a retail appointment, please visit www.oldpogue.com. Sold on a first come, first served basis. Apologies for the inconvenience, but we cannot reserve or ship.

Aptly named Old Mason for the county that is widely documented as the “birthplace of bourbon,” this four grain Kentucky bourbon is bottled at barrel proof (113.6 proof) and aged 7 years. It is available in our tasting room; but hurry, as the yield is only 125 - 750 ml bottles.

With the assistance of Mason County Judge Executive Joseph Pfeffer and Maysville-Mason County Industrial Development Authority Economic Development Director Owen McNeill, we distributed hand sanitizer to 20 first responders, healthcare facilities, the Women’s Crisis Center and detention center this week. Like so many of our kindred Kentucky craft distillers, we're thrilled to contribute what we can by donating to local heroes.

Our Story

Old Pogue has a history dating back to the years following the Civil War. In 1876, the original Pogue distillery, Kentucky registered distillery No. 3, was established in Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky, very near a site often said to be the location of Kentucky's first bourbon distillery.

Prior to Kentucky's statehood, Maysville was part of Old Bourbon County, Virginia, where pioneer distillers discovered that the Indian corn and limestone water of the region made a product of mellow character and distinguished flavor.

Today, the bourbon-making tradition is carried forward by fifth and sixth generation Pogues using the original Pogue recipes under a time-honored and fixed formula. Our current base of operation is located in the very same plot of land in Maysville, and we are proud to offer superior quality, small-batch bourbon and rye spirits.
