Updated Traffic Advisory: Closure Rescheduled for Simon Kenton Bridge (US 62) Upgrades
Cable replacement requires bridge to close to all vehicles and pedestrians; now begins June 8
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (June 1, 2026) – A closure of the Simon Kenton Memorial Bridge (US 62) in downtown Maysville needed to upgrade the Ohio River crossing has been rescheduled to allow more time for mobilization of construction equipment and coordination of repair work.
Motorists and pedestrians should note that contractors now expect to start the 15-month bridge closure needed for the project on Monday, June 8, instead of the previously scheduled Monday, June 1. Message boards and news releases will be used to share updates as the project progresses.
The $22.6 million project is a major investment in the 1930s-era bridge to repair and renovate the structure to safeguard it for today’s travelers and prolong it for years to come.
Work includes replacement of all 136 suspender cables – vertical cables extending from the main suspension cable that supprt the driving surface of the bridge. Other work includes various concrete patching repairs, overlaying the short sections of the bridge that pass over the anchorage houses, replacing the hand rope than runs along the top of the bridge, and more.
Cable replacement must be done without additional weight on the bridge, which for safety reasons requires the bridge to remain closed to all traffic.
The bridge will remain closed to motorists and pedestrian traffic through the end of the summer of 2027. This will be a 24/7 closure with no thru traffic. Message boards will be in place to alert traffic.
Motorists will need to use alternate routes throughout the duration of the project such as the nearby US 52, KY 8, and the William H. Harsha Bridge (US 68) three miles west of Maysville to connect between Kentucky and Ohio.
Work on the bridge is being completed by Structural Technologies LLC under a $22,602,000 contract with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
