The Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office was honored to join local agencies and over 3,000 runners for the 43rd anniversary of the New Jersey Law Enforcement Torch Run. During this event, officers, known as “Guardians of the Flame,” demonstrated that the “Flame of Hope” continues to burn brightly in the Garden State as they carried the torch toward the Special Olympics New Jersey’s Summer Games, which will take place this weekend at The College of New Jersey.
Sheriff Joseph “Tokyo” O’Donoghue expressed his pride in the men and women who participated in the morning event despite the warm weather. He stated, “I am incredibly proud of our agency and all of Atlantic County. It was an honor for the Sheriff’s Office to join Chief Michael Virga and his officers from the Hamilton Township Police Department, Chief Marcella Aylwin from the Egg Harbor City Police Department, Chief Eric Hendrickson and his officers from the Galloway Police Department, as well as the members of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Atlantic County Justice Facility, who ran alongside us during our leg of the run. I would also like to recognize K9 Officer Kelso, who served as the Sheriff’s Office liaison with the Torch Run organizers and helped facilitate our participation.”
Many thanks to the following officers who represented the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office: Chief O’Donoghue, Capt Brennan, Lt Brown, Lt Newman, Sgt Mulholland, Sgt Scott, Sgt Schellhas, Det Burgan, Det Pennington, Det Brown, Det Jinks, Det Martyn, Ofc Rolik, Ofc Dalton, Ofc McGowan, Ofc Marcucci, Ofc Kempton, and K9 Officers Richardson and Kelso.

The NJ Law Enforcement Torch Run features 26 separate legs, with some starting as early as 4:45 a.m., aimed at raising awareness for Special Olympics New Jersey. The Sheriff’s Office participated in Leg 8, which covered 5.2 miles along Route 30, starting from Jimmie Leeds Road in Galloway and ending at 2nd Terrace in Egg Harbor City.
NJ State Local PBA 243 donated $250 towards the Special Olympic athletes on behalf of the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Department.
