PUBLIC NOTICE – VANDALISM AT MAYODAN MUNICIPAL CEMETERY
The Mayodan Police Department received a report of vandalism at the Mayodan Municipal Cemetery, located on Ayersville Road.
Officers responded and conducted a walk-through of the cemetery. The vandalism appears to have been primarily concentrated in the section along Cemetery Street, where many of the gravesites have flat grave markers. At this time, officers have identified approximately 30 gravesites that appear to have been disturbed or vandalized.
Officers observed flowers that had been knocked over or damaged, sentimental items that had been moved or misplaced, and solar lighting that had been knocked over.
Officers photographed each affected gravesite and documented its condition before making any attempt to reposition or restore items. After documenting the sites, officers walked through the affected area and made an effort to correct as much of the vandalism as possible and return items to their apparent locations.
We recognize the personal and sentimental significance of these gravesites and the items placed there by family and friends. While officers made every effort to correct what they could, some items may have been moved from their original locations, and there may be damage or missing property that we have not yet identified.
If you have a loved one buried in the affected area and discover missing items, damaged property, or anything else you believe may be related to this incident, please contact the Mayodan Police Department to make a report.
This incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the vandalism is also encouraged to contact the Mayodan Police Department.
