Spotted Lanternfly Confirmed in Maynard

The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) has confirmed the presence of the invasive Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) in Maynard.

Spotted Lanternfly is an invasive insect that feeds on a wide variety of plants, including maples, grapevines, hops, tree-of-heaven, and many other trees and shrubs. While these insects do not bite or sting, large infestations can become a major nuisance, gathering in large numbers and leaving behind a sticky substance called honeydew on plants, outdoor furniture, vehicles, and other surfaces.

What should you do?
• Learn how to identify Spotted Lanternfly in its different life stages. • Check your yard, garden, and neighborhood for signs of the insect.
• Report any sightings to the state to help track its spread.
• Before traveling, inspect vehicles, trailers, outdoor equipment, and firewood to avoid accidentally moving the pest to new areas.

🌳 New Tree Tags Installed Throughout Maynard Downtown Arboretum! 🌳

We’re excited to share that 70 new tree identification tags have been installed throughout the Maynard Downtown Arboretum!

These attractive new labels make it easier than ever to explore and learn about our diverse collection of trees. Each tag includes the tree’s common name, Latin name, and botanical family, along with any special provenance information that helps tell the unique story of that tree.

This project would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our amazing Maynard Tree Corps volunteers. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped organize, prepare, and deploy the labels throughout the arboretum. Your efforts are helping make Maynard’s urban forest more accessible, educational, and enjoyable for residents and visitors alike.

Next time you’re downtown, take a stroll through the arboretum, discover a new favorite tree, and learn a little more about the remarkable diversity growing right here in Maynard!

Join us for the 3rd Annual Tree Talk & Ice Cream!

Did you know the trees lining our downtown streets are carefully chosen for our community by the Maynard Tree Committee and Corps? Come discover the stories behind them with Maynard's own Neil Pederson, local tree expert, as we take a walking tree tour through downtown.

This year's tour will highlight the newly planted trees by the Maynard Tree Committee and Tree Corps. You'll learn why each tree was selected, what makes it unique, and how they will benefit our town for years to come - including keeping our downtown cooler in the summertime!

After the tour, we'll head over to Theatre Creamery for free ice cream for everyone, compliments of Steve & Lizza Smith, Smith & Finley Homes.
