There are twelve new bestsellers, two new movies, one new audiobook, three new children's books, and 31 other new books, including nine that are available online.

The new bestsellers this week include "Homemaking with Babs: Tips and Tricks for Making a House a Home," "An Unexpected Life: A Memoir," and "Training for Your Old Lady Body: A Guide to Building Muscle and Mobility at Any Age." The new movies this week are "Sirat [Blu-ray]" and "When Fall Is Coming."

Maynard students have gone back to school well prepared by all the summer reading they did! This year 281 children and teens logged reading hours in MPL's summer reading program. Children logged over 4,500 hours, and teens logged nearly 2,000.

MPL held 37 summer reading events with total attendance of 957 by patrons of all ages.

Our summer reading program would not be possible without the support of many local businesses, organizations, and volunteers. They contribute prizes and refreshments, and they help make our events happen. Here is a list of contributors:

The Inside Story of Boston's Big Dig

David Kruh, a former Big Dig spokesperson, will tell the WHOLE story of of country's most expensive construction job. How Boston, straining for space to grow, cut down hills and filled in swamps and widened streets until the city was stalled in perpetual gridlock,.

Then we will journey deep inside the project's tunnels and soar high above the towers of Boston's stunning new bridge over the Charles River, and learn about the amazing technological advances used to build this monstrous project in a working city. And yes, and how the price climbed to a reported $22 billion.

Whether you're interested in Boston history, a fan of technology, or just an angry taxpayer who wants to see the actual hole into which the government dumped your money, this is a must-see show.

Thoreau and the Language of Trees

Author Richard Higgins will present an illustrated lecture, “Thoreau and the Language of Trees,” based on his 2017 book of that name from the University of California Press.

Henry Thoreau loved trees and saw and wrote about them as few others have. He admired their beauty and found poetic forms and mythic meaning in them. Thoreau studied how trees grew, and he also took them as his spiritual companions. He knew trees so well he could discern their individual character. In short, he spoke their language.

Pairing Thoreau’s words with photos of historic trees and Higgins' photos of trees in Concord, he will explore how Thoreau saw trees, what he learned from them and what they meant to him—as a naturalist, poet, philosopher and a walker who turned to the woods for inspiration, joy and companionship.

Great Reads Discussion: Nothing More of This Land

Join us for an engaging discussion about the 2026 Massachusetts Great Reads title Nothing More of This Land: Community, Power, and the Search for Indigenous Identity by Joseph Lee. Registered participants will receive a free copy of the book (while supplies last) and be invited to a virtual Q&A with the author! The discussion will be led by Book Mill moderator Wendy Valentine.

Before Martha’s Vineyard became one of the most iconic vacation destinations in the country, it was home to the Wampanoag people. Today, as tourists flock to the idyllic beaches, the island has become increasingly unaffordable for tribal members, with nearly three-quarters now living off-island. Growing up Aquinnah Wampanoag, journalist Joseph Lee grappled with what this situation meant for his tribe, how the community can continue to grow, and more broadly, what it means to be Indigenous.

Registered participants will be invited to participate in an exclusive Q&A with Joseph Lee on September 29th at 6pm. This discussion series is part of the 2026 Great Reads MA program, sponsored by the Massachusetts Center for the Book.
