Maynard Democratic Town Committee Dedicated to Democratic Values Join us! DUE TO COVID we are meeting on Zoom calls
We meet at the Maynard Library and at other venues in town.

Visitors are always welcome and we encourage participation by all of Maynard’s Democrats! Meetings are posted on the website and on Facebook. The Democratic Party is an organization built on the principle of inclusion, regardless of income level, family background, profession, race, gender or religion. We welcome all people into our ranks, recognizing that we live in a multi-cultural and pluralistic society that must address the needs of a wide diversity of people, not merely a fortunate few. The Maynard Democratic Town Committee (DTC) is the local arm of the State and National Democratic Party. DTC members also share a common vision aligned with the traditional principles of the Democratic Party and work locally in a variety of ways to advance these principles. DTC Members must be registered Democrats and residents of Maynard. The public elects members every four years. People may also choose to participate as associate members or simply as friends of the DTC. Website: www.maynarddems.org

A new University of Massachusetts Amherst/WCVB poll of 800 registered Massachusetts voters (conducted Oct. 5–12), shows Democratic Gov. Maura Healey holding a commanding 25-point lead over Republican challenger Mike Minogue in the 2026 gubernatorial race (57% to 32%, with independent Andrea James at 6%).

Healey’s advantage is driven largely by a wide gender gap (66–24 among women versus 47–42 among men), strong support among college-educated voters, and a 58% job-approval rating—her highest since February 2025—while voters trust her over Minogue by 20–30 points on key issues including abortion, education, health care, immigration, and crime.

Minogue faces a major obstacle in that more than 80% of voters view him as similar to President Donald Trump on issues such as abortion, immigration, health care, taxes, and transgender rights, and the words most frequently associated with him include “MAGA,” “Republican,” and “Unknown.”

In the U.S. Senate race, incumbent Democrat Ed Markey leads Republican John Deaton by more than 25 points (roughly 56–29), and Democrats hold large leads in other statewide contests.

Today is the day this one actually becomes usable.

Massachusetts residents 75 and older who no longer drive can now apply for a new Car-Free Seniors CharlieCard that gives them free rides on the subway, local buses, Commuter Rail and ferries.

The important catch is that this is specifically for seniors who have given up their driver’s license and now carry a Massachusetts ID card instead. A regular driver’s license does not qualify for the free-fare program.

If you already have a Mass ID, the online application takes about 5 to 7 minutes, and once approved, the benefit lasts eight years before renewal.

Seniors can also apply in person at the Charlie Service Center in downtown Boston, where they can receive a temporary credential the same day while the permanent one is mailed out.

And this isn’t just free subway rides around Boston. It covers Commuter Rail and ferry service too, which makes this a much bigger transportation benefit for older adults who still want to get around independently.

The RIDE isn’t completely free under this program, but eligible riders get 50% off those trips.

For a senior who stopped driving because of age, health, cost or simply not wanting to deal with a car anymore, eliminating transit fares can make getting to appointments, seeing family or just leaving the house a whole lot easier.
