Graves County Restricted Custody Center workers helping to clean up an illegal dump site on Meridian Road. Deputy John Cavin from the Graves County Sheriffs office responded to a call concerning this site and requested our assistance. This is just a small part of what we do everyday to keep Graves County beautiful and safe.

Since we are half way through the new year, it's time for an update. The Graves County Jail staff/inmates have removed 210,780 lbs of trash from roadways so far this year. We removed 17,680 lbs of trash in the month of June. I want to thank our staff and inmates for doing such a wonderful job.

Graves County Jail K9 Strong has received donation of body armor

Graves County Jail K9 Strong has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Strong’s vest was embroidered with the sentiment “Born to Love-Trained to Serve-Loyal Always”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and NIJ certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 4,682 vests to K9s in all 50 states at a value of $6.9 million, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $960 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1,744-$2,283, weighs an average of 4-5 lb., and comes with a five-year warranty. For more information, or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call 508-824-6978. We just want to clear up some misunderstanding. Graves County is not utilizing any money used for jail purposes to clean or maintain roadways. Graves County Jail has entered into a grant with the state highway Dept for 2 crews. The county also has another Litter Abatement Grant through the state. In all of these grants, the deputies salaries are paid, the inmates receive some pay, and mileage is reimbursed. This is a cost savings for the state, due to the pay and benefits for state employees costing more than ours, also due to the far lesser pay for inmates. This also allows inmates to have jobs to learn a work ethic and gives them extra incentives of time off their sentences. Only the lower level inmates qualify to be able to do this type of work. This should be viewed as a win, win for all involved.

I just wanna brag on the staff we have at Graves County Jail/ R C Center. I received a request at 10a today for some weeds to be cut at the intersection of 303 and Slaughter Rd. Traffic was having issues seeing north. I just got these pictures where our crews took care of it already.

I want to take a moment and brag on the crew from Graves County Jail. I noticed large holes in the highway bridge on 408 East. Big enough cars we’re going out into opposing lanes to avoid them. I let the crew know about the Thursday afternoon. It had been filled by Friday in the early afternoon.

I'm sorry, due to the recent events, I have kind of gotten out of the routine of posting our information for the month. I am going to try to get back to that. I just want to let the people know that since the incident on 12-10-22, we have had to house all of our county inmates in other jails, wherever we can find space. Some of them are going 2 hours away. The housing costs for these inmates in the month of January was just short of $85,000 for the month. We however were able to get 21 inmates that are low level class C & D felons back in our Restricted Custody Center in February. During the month of February, these crews worked hard to help clean up our county of debri left from the storm. They removed 137,320 lbs of trash from the sides of roadways in the month of February. This effort is continuing and we hope to help get our county back to a normal state soon. This goes right along with our theme of "Rebuilding Graves County from within".
