There have been a number of personnel changes at the Mayfield Police Department recently.

We congratulate Sergeant David Harrison and Officer Brant Shutt on their retirement. We appreciate their dedicated years of service to our community.

With the supervisory vacancy created with Harrison’s retirement, we congratulate Officer Tyler Simpson on his promotion to Sergeant, effective August 1, 2026. Simpson, a Navy veteran, and eight-year employee of the department is assigned to help lead third shift patrol.

MPD welcomes our newest Officer, Alyssa Taylor, a certified, six-year veteran, who previously served four of those years as a School Resource Officer. Officer Taylor is assigned to the Mayfield Middle School as their school resource officer.

On September 4, 2026, Mayfield Police Department Officers received a call of a three vehicle collision involving injuries at the intersection of the Dick Castleman Bypass and Charles Drive.



Contact was made with Dawn Barnett, age 51 of Murray, who was operating a Ford Fusion southbound on the bypass. Contact was made with Jessica Hurst, age 28 of Mayfield, who was operating a Dodge Dakota southbound on the bypass as well. Additionally, contact was made with Rachel Jones, age 54 of Arlington, who was operating a Dodge Caravan southbound on the bypass.



The investigation determined that Barnett failed to slow down and avoid Hurst and Jones who were slowing to make a right-hand turn onto Charles Drive from the bypass. Barnett's vehicle collided with the rear of Hurst's vehicle, causing it to collide with the rear of Jones' vehicle.



Barnett and Hurst were transported to Jackson Purchase Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries by Mayfield-Graves Fire/EMS. Mayfield Police Department was assisted at the scene by Burl's Towing Service and Affordable Towing Service.

The Mayfield Police Department welcomes its newest member, Officer Stephan McClellan, badge number 572. McClellan graduated on August 27th, 2026 from the Department of Criminal Justice Training in Richmond, Kentucky. McClellan served as the Class Leader demonstrating a drive to lead and setting a high standard for the Mayfield Police Department at the training academy.

The primary mission of the Basic Training Branch is providing the foundation for new law enforcement officers. The twenty-two-week academy is an intense learning experience for each student. Using adult-learning concepts, the DOCJT provides the foundation for success for an entry-level law enforcement officer.

Law Enforcement Basic Training involves many areas of training in a residential setting. The 809+ hour curriculum is a mentally and physically demanding challenge. Using a multi-faceted approach, recruits receive instruction in law enforcement in a disciplined environment stressing the Basic Training Creed.

Officer McClellan will be paired with a veteran Officer for an additional three months of field training before being permanently assigned to a patrol shift.

This is not a standard option trailer, it will stick out. It will have damage on the passenger side by the axles where he hit our gate on the way out.
