Mr. Kiet Trinh is a structural maintainer with the 908th Maintenance Squadron. In this position, he is responsible for inspecting, fabricating and repairing the airframe and skin using advanced metal-working and composite technique to ensure the aircraft remains structurally sound and flight-ready.

Trinh’s path to his military career began with an early interest in aircraft, as well as a calling toward serving in the U.S. military. Though he had originally considered the Marine Corps, Trinh chose the Air Force because of the branch’s career development opportunities.

“When I was younger, I wanted to go Marines,” said Trinh. “But as I got older, I learned that the Air Force helps you with building a better future and career.”

Trinh also serves as a quality assurance technician with the 908th Maintenance Group as a traditional reservist, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. In this position, he inspects and verifies work to ensure maintenance actions meet required standards. Trinh’s experience in structural maintenance provides him with firsthand experience with what to look for in his QA position.

“My job is to go back and ensure that maintainers are doing everything by the book," he said. “Making sure that what they are doing is safe and that we're ready for the mission.”

Trinh uses his time in the Air Force Reserve as an opportunity to explore different career paths. The flexibility of his Traditional Reservist and civilian job made it possible for him to earn a degree in Cyber Security. He has since encouraged other Airmen within his squadron to pursue a degree, taking advantage of the many education benefits the Air Force provides.

Service and family have influenced Trinh’s commitment to the military. As the son of immigrants, he said that patriotism and his gratitude for opportunity are strong motivators for him. “I just want to serve my country in whatever way I can,” he said.

Trinh is known for his initiative, mentorship, and fostering morale. He exemplifies what it means to be a standout member of the 908th, continuously learning and encouraging those around him.

“I’ve always pushed people to go and get their professional military education, and to get their degrees done,” said Trinh.

Outside of the duty day, Trinh balances family with visiting national parks, volunteering in his kids’ fundraisers, and attending community events.

Trinh’s combination of technical experience and dedication to service are qualities that contributed to his recognition as the 908th FTW’s Category II Civilian of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2025.

Senior Master Sgt. David Stinson is an Air Reserve Technician serving as the heavy aircraft integrated avionics flight chief in the 908th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. In this role, he supervises and manages a team of about 30 avionics technicians, handling all administrative duties, performance reports, and day-to-day functions so his team can focus on fixing aircraft.

Stinson joined the Air Force in 1990 and spent nine years on active duty, taking a break for a few years before joining the Air National Guard for a year, and then the Air Force Reserve in 2005. For most of his 30-year career he has specialized in hydraulics, working on airframes like the B-52, C-141, C-5, and C-130.

With the 908th Flying Training Wing’s conversion to the MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopter he found himself in his current position. He admitted it was bittersweet leaving the flight line, as he misses the hands-on maintenance and camaraderie of the maintainer community, but now he has come to enjoy his role as a senior noncommissioned officer. The position allows him to ensure his technicians have everything they need to do their jobs without worrying about the administrative aspects.

“You know, maintenance is a special breed,” said Stinson. “But I enjoy making sure that they can do their jobs.”

Outside of the office, Stinson focuses on his family at home with four children, two stepchildren, and three grandchildren. His oldest son is following in his footsteps and has joined the wing as an aircraft mechanic.

“I know it's a perfect path for him,” he said. “I hope he enjoys it as much as I have. It's a very prideful moment when we have staff meetings and his name shows up on the screen.”

Outside of the 908th, he enjoys spending time doing yard work, which he describes as his way of relaxing. His daily motivation comes from supporting the mission, seeing aircraft fly, and, most meaningful, training young Airmen and watching them grow into exceptional maintainers and leaders.

Stinson's core advice to younger Airmen is to always be ready, never make the Air Force wait for you, utilize tuition benefits early for education, gain knowledge, and build invaluable connections across the unit.

“Find yourself a mentor,” said Stinson. “Someone that you trust and pick their brain. Find out every bit of information that you can get. The more information you have, the better equipped you'll be. And just enjoy your time.”

As the 1st Quarter 2025 Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter for the 908th Flying Training Wing, Stinson embodies the community, and camaraderie that comes with being a part of the wing.

From stay-at-home mom to the 908th Flying Training Wing’s Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter for the 1st Quarter of 2025, Tech. Sgt. Maria Chang Cruz has brought passion, purpose, and a deep sense of gratitude to every role she’s taken on.

Originally from Ecuador, Chang Cruz came to the United States in 2007, adjusting to a new country, culture, and life as a military spouse. That experience ultimately lit the spark that led her to join the Air Force Reserve more than a decade later.

“When I came to the United States and I saw the job that my husband was doing in the military, it made a big impact,” she said. “In my country, it’s different. Since then, I started learning more about what the military was like here, all the programs and blessings they offer for families and had been asking my husband, ‘When can I join?”

That experience sparked her own interest in serving, and in 2019, at the age of 37, she took the leap to join the Air Force Reserve. Originally, Chang Cruz started in the Command Support Staff at the 908th Airlift Wing. As the unit transitioned to the 908th Flying Training Wing, she cross-trained into logistics planning in March 2023, and now is a contingency & wartime plans technician.

“We had two little girls so the decision had to be mutual and so he finally caved in by the end of 2018," said Chang Cruz.” It worked because I was able to be with my kids and take care of my family when he was gone due to military training and deployments. “Now he’s a retired infantryman E-7 with 21 years of service so he's now doing what he is passionate about, coaching soccer and working for Georgia Soccer as an instructor, besides chilling and taking care of the house. So now it’s my turn, right?”

As a logistics planning specialist, she is managing readiness processes for deployments and military exercises. She trains unit deployment managers and oversees the UDM program. She also works in conjunction with her Director of Operations and supervisor to conduct weekly briefings for the Wing Commander and serves as the Support Agreement Manager to maintain host-tenant agreements for base support. Though she hasn’t deployed yet, she’s played a vital role in preparing others for deployment and welcoming them home, something she describes as one of the most fulfilling parts of her job.

“What I’ve enjoyed most is the people and how everyone is willing to help each other even when everyone is stressed and overwhelmed through difficult times, " said Chang Cruz. “We still support one another. We are a family.”

Chang Cruz’s hard work and leadership were recognized when she earned her NCO of the quarter award, but she felt that it was really a team effort, a team award. “It’s a team effort. I got the award, but it’s for everyone I work with,” she said. “It was my first time managing a deployment, and I had a lot of questions. Every unit and person I reached out to here was very helpful and always supported me in coming up with a successful plan.”

Looking ahead, she is focused on continued growth. She recently completed her seven-level training, is currently enrolled in a deployment course, and hopes to attend professional military education next year. She also plans to pursue a doctorate in project management to add on to her bachelor’s degree in human services and Master of Business Administration.

Outside of work, she finds joy in running, spending time with her family and pets, traveling with her husband for soccer games, and volunteering at the Columbus Botanical Garden. She draws strength from her family, especially her husband, who now supports her career while managing their home.

When asked what motivates her, she stays grounded in humility. “My drive comes from within,” she said. “This is me. I set my own goals and push myself to reach them but I also learn from everyone because the strength of the team lies in each individual member.”

She advises newer Airmen to remember each day is a blessing, a new opportunity, and to come in ready to grow while always being yourself.

Chang Cruz’s journey has become an inspiration to those around her. As she said, “I knew I was meant for something bigger.”

For the last two years, Master Sgt. Daunte Saloy has been a vital part of the 908th, serving as one of only two full-time First Sergeants in the wing. In his final days with the 908th Operations Support Squadron, we reflect on his service and contributions to the wing.

We wish him well on his next assignment at Homestead Air Reserve Base.

22nd Air Force | 10th Air Force | Air Force Reserve

Master Sgt. Daunte Saloy, the 908th Operations Support Squadron First Sergeant, was named the 908th Flying Training Wing's 1st Sgt. of the Year for back-to-back years, and also earned the title of 22nd Air Force's 1st Sgt. of the Year. This is his story.
