Investing in Our Future: New Jobs and Infrastructure for Continued Growth in Mattoon

The City of Mattoon is proud to partner with Rural King and the State of Illinois on a transformational investment in our community.
Rural King has announced construction of a new $75 million Store Support Campus on approximately 60 acres at the northeast corner of Broadway Avenue East and Swords Drive. The campus will include a flagship store, a three-story corporate headquarters, and a 40,000-square-foot event center that will be available for community use.

This expansion will create 100 new full-time jobs and retain more than 700 existing positions, reinforcing Rural King’s deep roots in Mattoon.

As part of this project, the City through a partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation and its Economic Development Program will extend Swords Drive north from Broadway Avenue, improving access, safety, and long-term development opportunities in the area.

This project reflects strong collaboration between local, state, and industry partners and represents a significant investment in Mattoon’s future.

We thank Rural King, Coles Together, IDOT, and the State of Illinois for their continued commitment to our community.

Charleston Avenue (IL 16) Roadwork Update

Crews are paving today at the intersection of Lake Land Boulevard and Charleston Avenue (IL 16). Following completion of this work, crews will begin paving side roads and entrances throughout the project area.

Motorists should expect lane closures, construction traffic, and delays near the intersection and surrounding areas. Please use caution, allow extra travel time, and consider alternate routes when possible. All work is weather dependent and schedules may change.

Charleston Avenue (IL 16) Roadwork Update

Due to the weather forecast, paving operations will not take place again today.

Crews will be on-site removing temporary pavement marking tape on the east end of the project and preparing side roads for upcoming paving work.

Please note that traffic signals along the corridor will not be fully timed and programmed until the project is complete. This is part of the overall construction process and helps ensure the system functions properly once all work is finished.

This is an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) project, and work is being coordinated through the state.

Motorists may still encounter lane closures and construction activity in the area. Please use caution, allow extra travel time, and consider alternate routes when possible. All work remains weather dependent and schedules may change.

Charleston Avenue (IL 16) Roadwork Update – June 5, 2026

On Friday, June 5, crews plan to place the final layer of asphalt on the driving lanes along Charleston Avenue (IL 16).

Looking ahead to next week, work will continue with resurfacing of the passing lanes, turn lanes, and side streets throughout the project area.

Motorists should expect lane closures, temporary side street closures, construction traffic, and delays. Please use caution in work zones, allow extra travel time, and consider alternate routes when possible. All work is weather dependent and schedules may change.

Charleston Avenue (IL 16) Roadwork Update

Crews are continuing paving operations along Charleston Ave. today and anticipate completing the first layer of pavement (base layer) between 5th Street and Lake Land Boulevard by the end of the day.

Looking ahead, milling of side streets between 5th Street and Lake Land Boulevard is scheduled to begin Tuesday and continue through Thursday, with work possibly extending into Friday. If milling is completed by Thursday, paving operations are expected to resume on Friday.

Motorists should expect lane closures, temporary side street closures, construction traffic, and delays throughout the week. Please use caution in work zones, allow extra travel time, and consider alternate routes when possible. All work is weather dependent and schedules may change.

Charleston Avenue (IL 16) Roadwork Update – May 28, 2026

On Thursday, May 28, crews will be cleaning up around the manholes. On Friday, May 29th, crews will place the first layer of new pavement (base layer) in the driving lanes along Charleston Ave. from 5th Street to Lake Land Boulevard (US 45). Detector loop installation will also continue between Logan Street and Swords Drive.

Motorists should expect lane closures, construction vehicles, and delays throughout the work area. Please use caution, allow extra travel time, and consider alternate routes when possible. All work is weather dependent and schedules may change.

Charleston Avenue (IL 16) Roadwork Update

Work is underway today along Charleston Avenue (IL 16). Crews are milling the roadway between 5th Street and 11th Street and cutting detector loops between Logan Street and Swords Drive.

On Wednesday, milling will continue from 11th Street to Lake Land Boulevard (US 45). Detector loop work will also continue between Logan Street and Swords Drive.

Motorists should expect lane closures, construction vehicles, and delays in these areas. Please use caution in work zones, allow extra travel time, and consider alternate routes when possible. All work is weather dependent and schedules may change.
