Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a powerful reminder of our nation's history and the resilience of African Americans.
On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free. The passage of the 13th Amendment later abolished slavery in the United States, marking a significant step toward justice and freedom.
In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday, recognizing the importance of this day in American history.
Juneteenth serves as an annual reminder of the historic struggles and sacrifices endured by African Americans, while also honoring the hope, joy, and promise of freedom that was felt on that day and continues to inspire generations.
As we reflect, celebrate, and recommit ourselves to equity and justice, let us remember that freedom's journey requires all of us to continue building a more inclusive and united future.

Today, on Women's Veterans Recognition Day, we pause to honor the courageous women who have worn our nation's uniform and answered the call to serve. Women veterans have broken barriers, led with strength, and made immeasurable sacrifices to protect our freedoms. Their service extends far beyond the battlefield; they are leaders, mothers, mentors, entrepreneurs, and pillars of our communities. As we recognize the contributions of women veterans across Illinois and our nation, let us also recommit ourselves to ensuring they have access to the support, resources, and opportunities they have earned through their service. To every woman who has served or is currently serving: thank you for your courage, your sacrifice, and your unwavering commitment to our country. We honor you today and every day.

Yesterday, I was honored to join Dr. Twin Green, The Link & Option Center, healthcare professionals, and community leaders for the launch of their new Mobile Health Clinic.

Having had the opportunity to support this initiative, it was especially meaningful to witness this vision become a reality. This investment in our South Suburban communities represents hope, compassion, and a commitment to meeting people where they are.

From maternal health and primary care to mental health support and crisis services, this mobile clinic will help ensure that essential care reaches those who need it most.

I am grateful for the leadership and dedication of Dr. Twin Green and The Link & Option Center as they continue to remove barriers to care and improve the quality of life for families throughout our region.

Together, we can build healthier communities, stronger families, and brighter futures.

I’m so heartbroken to learn about the passing of our community icon, Spencer Leak Jr. He was a visionary leader and advocate for the less fortunate, but also a proud Chicagoan who always put people first. The arms of the Leak family extend to every facet of Cook County and beyond.

Surely Spencer carried the family torch of love and compassion in a spirit of excellence and truth. On behalf of the residents of the 38th Legislative District of Illinois, I extend my condolences to his entire family and the staff of the Leak Funeral Home.
