The Mattapoisett Police Department has received reports of fraud involving purchases made through Facebook. Numerous scams involve email addresses and profiles that may appear legitimate, often advertising items at unusually low prices.

The Mattapoisett Police Department advises the public to exercise extreme caution when communicating with individuals on social media and to avoid making purchases from unverified sources online.

On behalf of the men and women of the Mattapoisett Police Department, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Retired Fire Chief Ronald Scott. We join the Mattapoisett Fire Department, his family, and loved ones in mourning this tremendous loss. May they find comfort in knowing that his legacy of service and dedication will never be forgotten.

Rest easy, Chief Scott. Thank you for your service.

It is with great sadness and regret that we announce the passing of Retired Mattapoisett Fire Chief Ronald Scott.

Chief Scott passed away on March 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He joined the Mattapoisett Fire Department in 1968 and faithfully served the community for over four decades. He was appointed Fire Chief in 1993 and led the department with pride and dedication until his retirement in 2009.

Chief Scott was known for his strong work ethic, commitment to the department, and deep admiration for his family. He served with honor and was a mentor to many members, leaving a lasting impact that will never be forgotten.

We extend our deepest condolences to the entire Scott family during this difficult time.

Mattapoisett Police Emergency Medical Services is currently seeking qualified candidates for per-diem and part-time Paramedic positions.

Job Requirements:
• High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Possess a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.
• Current Massachusetts Paramedic certification.
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Current CPR certification.
• Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Knowledge of current Massachusetts Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) protocols in order to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care of patients in a pre-hospital setting.
• Have a working knowledge of all equipment utilized within this service.

It is with deep sadness that the Mattapoisett Police Department announces the passing of Paramedic Richard “Rick” Scherbarth.

Rick proudly served the community as a paramedic with Mattapoisett Police EMS for more than 10 years. Throughout his career, he demonstrated unwavering dedication, compassion, and professionalism. He was deeply committed to helping others during some of their most difficult moments and consistently answered the call with skill and care.

Rick was also a familiar and respected presence in the community, generously volunteering his time to instruct numerous CPR classes for both staff and residents. His service and contributions made a lasting impact on the community he served and on the colleagues who worked alongside him.

Beyond his professional role, Rick was a valued colleague and friend. He will be remembered for his strong commitment to public service, his teamwork, and his selfless willingness to put others first.

On behalf of the men and women of the Mattapoisett Police Department, we extend our deepest condolences to Rick’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with them as we honor his life and dedicated service.

Town of Mattapoisett Storm Update:

Road crews from the Highway Department continue clearing streets and addressing snow and ice conditions across town. Please be patient as this work continues.

Eversource Energy reports that 99% of power has been restored. If you are still without electricity, please contact Eversource directly to ensure they are aware of your outage.

Schools remain closed today 02/26/2026

Residents are reminded to use caution when pulling out of driveways or side streets where high snow banks may limit visibility. Please proceed slowly and carefully.

Icy conditions and slippery surfaces remain throughout town. Black ice may not be visible, especially during the early morning and evening hours. Please use extreme caution when driving and walking.

We also ask everyone to be mindful of pedestrian safety. With narrowed roadways and snow-covered sidewalks, some individuals may be walking along the street. Drivers should remain alert, reduce speed, and allow extra space.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Mattapoisett Highway, Water, Fire Departments for their tireless work over this past week. Your dedication and long hours have made a tremendous difference in keeping our community safe.

Mattapoisett Community:

Mattapoisett Town crews are continuing snow removal and cleanup efforts following yesterday’s winter storm and remain focused on improving road conditions throughout the Town. Town officials are closely in contact with Eversource regarding restoring power as soon as possible. We thank residents for their continued patience as this work progresses.

A Warming and Charging Center has been opened at the American Legion Hall, located at #3 Depot Street and will be available today, 2/24/26, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM for residents in need of a warm space or a place to charge essential electronic devices.

Please be advised that pets are not permitted inside the facility, with the exception of registered service animals.

Residents are urged to check in on neighbors who may need assistance. Additional updates will be shared as conditions continue to improve.

Winter Storm Advisory for Residents

The Town of Mattapoisett advises residents that a significant winter storm is expected to impact Mattapoisett beginning Sunday evening and continuing through Monday.

Expected Conditions:
• Sunday Night: Heavy snow developing with deteriorating travel conditions.
• Monday: Potential blizzard conditions, including:
Heavy snowfall
Strong winds
Reduced visibility / whiteout conditions
Possible power outages
Risk of coastal flooding in vulnerable areas
• Monday Night: Rapid temperature drop, increasing the likelihood of icy conditions

Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel Sunday night through Monday. Road conditions may become hazardous due to snow accumulation and low visibility.

Power Outage Preparedness
• Charge electronic devices in advance.
• Keep flashlights and extra batteries accessible.
• Report outages directly to your electric provider.

Parking
• Do not park on public roadways during snow removal operations.

Cold Weather Safety
• Dress in layers and limit prolonged outdoor exposure.
• Take frequent breaks when shoveling snow.

Winter Storm Update for Mattapoisett Residents (Sunday–Monday)

Local Officials are closely monitoring the snow storm Sunday into Monday. The most recent NOAA update as of 1.30pm 1/24/25

A high-impact winter storm is expected to affect our area from Sunday into Monday, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions.

Snow is expected to begin late Sunday morning, becoming heavy Sunday afternoon through late evening, with snowfall rates of 1–2 inches per hour at times. Travel conditions will deteriorate rapidly, especially Sunday evening and overnight, and impacts are likely to continue into Monday morning.

Snowfall totals for the south coast region will receive 8"- 12", with higher totals possible. Areas closer to the coast may see lower totals if snow mixes with sleet later in the storm.

Strong winds Sunday night into early Monday may cause near-blizzard conditions at times, particularly in exposed and coastal areas. Following the storm, very cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills are expected.

Residents are encouraged to limit travel, prepare for difficult road conditions, and plan ahead for possible delays or disruptions. Town crews will be actively working throughout the storm.

Extreme Cold Weather Advisory & Winter Storm Update

The Town of Mattapoisett is advising residents of an Arctic front expected to impact the area Friday night through Saturday. Temperatures on Saturday will be well below seasonal norms, with dangerous wind chill values that may reach -20°F.

Residents are urged to take appropriate safety precautions, including:

-Limiting outdoor exposure

-Wearing multiple layers and covering exposed skin

-Being aware that frostbite can occur in minutes

-Checking on elderly neighbors and those requiring assistance

-Ensuring pets are brought indoors and home heating systems are functioning

Town officials are also closely monitoring Storm Fern, which may affect the area Sunday into Monday. Travel conditions may deteriorate Sunday night, and residents are encouraged to stay off roadways unless absolutely necessary.

To support snow removal and emergency operations:

Please park vehicles off roadways to allow the Mattapoisett Highway Department and MassDOT to plow and treat roadways efficiently.
