Rainbow Trout season is here!

We kicked off the season this week with Rainbow Trout stocked at Riverside Duck Pond in Victoria and the pond at Palmetto State Park, giving local anglers a great chance to enjoy some wintertime fishing close to home.

More stockings are coming soon to Corpus Christi area ponds, so stay tuned and get your gear ready!

Rainbow Trout provide a unique winter fishing opportunity you won’t find at any other time of year in Texas waters. Check out the link below to see when trout will be stocked in a pond near you and plan your next trip!

Water Returns to Harlingen Sports Complex Pond!!!

With water levels returning to normal level at the Harlingen Sports Complex Pond, our team took advantage of the opportunity to enhance fish habitat and support a healthier, more productive fishery.

Thanks to our partners with the City of Harlingen and funding from the Conservation License Plate (CLP) program, the pond received a series of pine fish cribs that will provide long-lasting structural habitat for forage species and juvenile sportfish. These cribs offer excellent cover, helping young fish avoid predators, boosting overall survival, and concentrating sportfish for anglers to pursue.

Additionally, several catfish spawning boxes were strategically placed to encourage natural reproduction and strengthen the catfish population. This will provide anglers with more opportunities to catch quality fish in the future.

As the pond stabilizes, these habitat features will play a key role in improving both fish communities and angling experiences for visitors. Come check out the progress next time you're at the Sports Complex!

Dunlap Reservoir is making a tremendous comeback!

As many of you remember, Dunlap Reservoir was dewatered in 2019 following a spillgate failure and remained confined to the river channel until the new dam was completed in 2023. When we first electrofished the reservoir that fall, the fish populations were severely diluted.

Fast-forward to our latest electrofishing survey, and the progress has been remarkable! We’re now seeing major increases in both Largemouth Bass and forage species compared to 2023 (check out the catch-rate comparisons below). Even better, Bass size structure and body condition have improved dramatically, showing strong signs of recovery.

Much of this success can be credited to the “new lake effect”, a natural boost in productivity that often follows refilling events. Aside from this natural process, supplemental stockings conducted by TPWD have helped rebuild the fish populations with adequate forage and trophy genetics. Together, these factors are fueling Dunlap’s rebound and setting the stage for fantastic fishing opportunities in the years ahead.

Have you ever seen wire cages like these around your local reservoir and wondered what they are being used for??

Our team is using cages like these to help re-establish vegetation in Coleto Creek Reservoir. The cages protect the plants from being eaten by fish a turtles while they start to establish in the reservoir. The idea is that as the plants grow and expand outside of the fencing, they will become more sustainable and no longer require protection.

Once established, the vegetation provides valuable habitat for fish and other organisms in the reservoir. Many forage and game species rely on this habitat to avoid predation and maximize their hunting efficiency.

Lake Corpus Christi Habitat Update!

Yesterday, our team successfully deployed the final fish habitat structures for this phase of the project, bringing the total to 22 structures across 9 sites throughout the lake!

These structures are designed to enhance fish habitat, improve angling opportunities, and support the overall health of the lake’s ecosystem.

We’re just as excited as you are for the final phase of this project — and trust us, it’s something we think y’all are really going to enjoy. Stay tuned!

Phase Two of the Lake Corpus Christi Fish Habitat Enhancement Project is Underway

Yesterday, nine additional pine fish cribs were successfully deployed at three key locations around the big fishing pier. These structures were carefully positioned just beyond typical casting distance—an intentional strategy to attract fish into the area while reducing the risk of snags.

This marks another step forward in our ongoing efforts to improve fish habitat throughout the lake. With nine more cribs already constructed and ready for placement, the work is far from over.

And there’s more to come. The final phase of this project includes a feature we believe will generate real excitement among anglers and lake enthusiasts alike. Stay tuned—we're looking forward to sharing what’s next.
